howdy.

the current on-site and studio work i am doing, and perhaps weakening eyesight, has caused me to not trust what i see in the canon d-60 lcd...like details and a decent 'overview' of the shot i have just taken. i have attempted to use an immediate upload to a notebook pc, but using my son's NEW fujitsu laptop with 512ram, 1.8 ghz and 15" lcd...i find the images to be way dark compared to desktop view, and acdsee WAY slow in providing images (painfully slow). my toshiba 16" lcd laptop is 10lbs and bulky (but the 16" screen is very kewl...a crowd-stopper).

anyone using a tablet PC with photoshop (will it run?) and using it 'onsite' to review and possibly process images? tehthered? any insight would be appreciated.
(seems like a P 3 processor at 800mz would be too slow for images).

thanks.

I have the Fujitsu Tablet PC and find the operating system XP for Tablet PC to be rather buggy. The PC is fast enough to run Photoshop, with lots of memory, but the bugs in the OS drive me nuts! I would wait until they come out with the service release for the XP for Tablet PC OS.

thanks george.
good point. happens with all 'new' software.we are their beta lab.

don't want to have a client wondering if i know how to work a computer, nifty looking though it may be. i DO like the fujitsu laptop except for the quirk with dark images on acdsee and s l o w..... i even tried to adjust the screen rez.
unfortunately the fujitsu laptop maxes at 512 ram

Robert,

I have Fujitsu C6631, 1GHz and 256MB. I use PS 7 on regular basis and i have no problem related to performance and speed. I have XP professional (Sp1) installed on my system. I also use ACDSEE frequently. In fact it is my favorite browser. I never had any problem like you mentioned. Tell you the truth, photos on my Fujitsu LCD are sharper and crispier than my Desktop monitor. So much so that just yesterday i dumped my CRT monitor and got an LCD one.

Check your memory resident programs like virus scanner and other utilities. Close unnecessary ones before running PS. They do eat up lot of memory. If possible try to clean your windows installation. For darker images, check you monitor calibration or adjust gamma in ACDSEE. Hope it helps.

I have used Photoshop 6on the Acer Tablet during the beta testing period of Windows XP Tablet Edition, and successfully, I ight add. I think that the bugs you are refering to are hardware related and not neccessarily OS related.

Yuu should consider the Apple Powerbook ( http://www.apple.com/powerbook ).

Killer size, killer portability, killer looks and killer performance.

Its about as thin as it gets, has a high resolution (1152x852) widescreen! 15,2" LCD and is also avaible with a DVD burner!

Besides that Mac OS (X) is also THE OS you'll want for graphical purposes (like Photoshop, Illustrator etc.) the G4's velocity engine simply wipes the floor with its P4/XP equivalants ( http://www.apple.com/g4/myth/ )

It IS costy though, the iBook is also a good option but less portable and smaller screen

my ad guy is also putting the full court press on apple....and i am almost ready to be a convert. he has the laptop you speak of...very kewl.

thanks!!!!

the powerpc laptop is v. kewl. Only one I use. But these machines

are SLOW on PS compared with SIMILAR PRICED PCs, and worse, the Nikon Capture software I was using was about 5x slower.

I like Apple. I use Apple. But they need to improve developer support.

Robert, to answer your question we've been using a tablet computer for almost a year now. The QBE from Acquess Technologies, now out of business I think. We photograph weddings events and studio portraiture. We also teach conventional and digital photography from our own facility. I built a mount for the tablet that allows me to mount it to my tripod coming off one of the legs with a Bogen magic arm. This allows me to shoot from the tripod and download directly to the tablet. We use the Breeze Remote Capture along with Compu Pic...all of this on top of XP Home. This is a comfortable workflow. I have actions in Compu Pic that will Gray Scale, Crop, and Sharpen so that by the end of the shoot I will have an optimized file for viewing.

We also take the tablet on location and use it as a image bank for downloading flashcards.

Finally, using the tablet attached to the tripod while shooting formals draws alot of attention I must say. Some photographers might find this an annoyance but I must say the technology is so much fun that we're happy to talk to people about it. Being able to show clients their images on the spot does instill a sense of confidence.

I searched this thread to see if there was any interest in the new Microsoft-standard TabletPC's. One interesting point about these is that they MUST use an active pen, the same type as used on Wacom tablets.

This would seem to be the perfect concept for editing in Photoshop, where the pen acts directly on the image.

Also, the keyboardless units (slates) should be a bit thinner and lighter, lacking the keyboard and display housing.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/tabletpc/evaluation/tours/mmtour/Motion.htm

Several of them seem to be just "giant PDA's", but ones like the Motion/Gateway unit look like they'll have the power to handle PS 7 and other apps. I think I'll hold off on that new Sony SRX series until I see how this new breed turns out.

With 384Mb RAM and it´s slow to convert RAW to TIFF.

I use a pocket PC with Photogenics and while it is a little bit slow it is very comfortable to use. Photogenics is an interesting package, but a lot different than a Photoshop.

I also hear that Compaq has a wicked cool laptop/tablet PC out. I sort of looks like the ultimate PC since you can use it in parts or as a whole normal dektop PC or a full laptop.

Bugs, Look out for NVIDIA video cards. They have nasty problems with Windows XP that they seem unable to resolve.

Best of luck!

Thanks again to everyone.

very, very kewl idea about mounting the tablet to the tripod. it solves the problem of short cabling....and yes...i am sure it gets attention. thanks joseph.

i am looking at the compaq tablet also. pretty kewl, but i have been to comp usa (i know, a waste of time) 3 times now and no one helps you, and when they do they are clueless about capabilities. one guy actually tried to read from the flyer to answer my questions. i applaud the guys for working and not collecting welfare though. after the holiday return time i am going to attempt to get an 'appointment' to give it a try, MD in hand and all.

NVIdia cards???? no wonder i am getting bad resolution on laptops with them and S l o w refresh.

anyhow....

everyone here have a great holiday season, take the photos you have dreamed of, and get lucrative contracts in 2003. or just enjoy the heck outta living and shooting.
may the creator look in on you all in a good way.
