Hi folks,

I'm just getting back into 'big' camera work after a long layoff from film (Minolta) and was wondering if this lens is compatible with the Nikon D5500:

Tamron 10-24mm f3.5-4.5 Di II LD AF SP Aspherical Lens (IF) - Nikon Fit

The Tamron lens mount is Nikon F (as is the D5500) and the lens is for the DX sensor. However, the Nikon specs for the D5500 say AF is not supported:

'Autofocus is available with AF-S and AF-I lenses; autofocus is not available with other type G and D lenses, AF lenses'

the Tamron is an AF lens so does that mean it's manual focus only? If it has manual at all that is.

thanks,

Alistair

The "AF-S" description is for Nikon lenses only; other manufacturers use different alphabet soup.

But it looks like it won't autofocus on your camera; it only autofocuses on Nikons with built-in motors (at least, that's how I read the Tamron site). You are, however, fortunate in this regard: it's a lousy lens. I bought one and immediately returned it after doing some test shots; I traded it (along with several hundred dollars) for the Nikkor 10-24, which is quite a good lens and will work on your camera.

But looking at B&H, they say the Tamron has a motor, meaning that it will AF on a D5500.

Regardless, it's a lousy lens.

thanks Leonard, that's useful information. I'd heard it was better than the Sigma but now I see the Nikkor and yes it does look good. Think I'll go for that instead.

thanks again,

Alistair
