Can anyone give me their views on which of the 2 cameras is really value for money? I had my mind set in the 601 , but recently read a write up on the S45 and now I really don't know which one to buy.

Any advise would be most welcome. You can even email me if you want:

Plan to shoot video clips? Buy the F601z.
Don't care about video? Buy the S45.

For the price of the s45 alone you can buy the 601, docking kit, 2-128mb smartmedia's, an extra battery, and a quick charger.

Yea the s45 has a focus assist, but it's only good at wide and not tele. At wide the 601 does fine in low light anyway, so to me that voids out that feature.

Image quality is very comparable.

601 has faster shot to shot, fps, quicker shutter (1/2000) with both being quick pocket camera's overall.

Either one is a good choice. To me, the 601 is just a better one.

Why do you say so? Does the F601z give a smoother picture in video mode?

640x480 video size. 4 times the resolution of most other camera's which have a 320x240 max size for video.

601 also works as a web cam on your PC. As a voice recorder for meetings. Has a under water case available. Uses a standard slave flash for the times you really want a great indoor picture. etc.

6mp mode equal to most 4megapixel camera's. (check PA's review here for more on that, so you're not just taking my word for it.)

Great battery life. I'm pretty sure it's the still at the top of the list for battery life when compared to all other compact digital camera's.

Just like it's brother (602), it offers the best "bang for buck" purchase.

The F601z has the best video in its class. 640 x 480 resolution is significantly sharper than the others 320 x 240. It captures 15fps (fast enough to be reasonably smooth) for unlimited length (well, 3.5 minutes on a 128 Mbyte card). And not often mentioned is the fact that it uses the capability of the SuperCCD sensor to aggregate multiple pixels to improve low-light sensitivity when shooting video. I find I can successfully shoot good video in pretty low light conditions, e.g. firelight, dimly lit rooms etc. Even the sound capture is quite good. It does exactly what I hoped for, and I know I wouldn't have been happy with anything less by comparison. I also like that it's small and light, very fast in operation, and has good battery life.

On the other hand I have to say that the Canon S30/S40/S45 model line is a superbly executed set of cameras that beats the pants off every other competing model I tried for all-round photographic capability, functionality, ease of use, and software bundle. If it weren't for the fact that the F601z has significantly better video, and it's just a little notch below the Canon in most other important areas, I would probably have bought the Canon S40 instead of the Fuji. I'm not knocking the Fuji here - I love mine and I wouldn't swap it for anything else available at the moment. It's just that every camera has a few outstanding qualities, and probably the best camera is the one that's outstanding the area most important to you, and doesn't have some major fault you can't accept in another area.

Thank you to everyone who replied. I think my mind is now made up, I am settling for the Fuji F601

Thanks
