Im fairly new to astrophotography. I currently just have a 18-55mm kit lens. Im looking to upgrade so I can attempt to catch the milky way this summer. My first question is do you think I will be able to capture the milky way with this lens? Also im seeing everywhere that this is a 38mm equivalent. What exactly does that mean? I don't have a huge budget so this is why im opting for this lens. If you guys could answer those questions that would be greatly appreciated! Also if you've used this lens maybe attach some photos, preferably astrophotography photos. Thank you!

All it means is that if you have an APS-C camera body that the effective FF is 38mm. I have this lens on the way and hope to post some star shots soon. I am hoping it will work for milky way shots myself if the coma is ok.

Thanks for the info, and please do post some pics on this thread I would love to see some before I make a decision to get one.

Will do! Have the lens, just waiting on clear skies. I already like the lens. Might be my favorite for video already!

Finally blessed with a clear night so I tried out the 24mm. So far not to impressed. Coma is still showing up in the corners even when stopped down to 4.0. At least the purple fringing is not showing up as bad as my 50mm. Focus was tricky, at 10x live view I could not seem to get the lens to focus tack sharp (stars as pinpoints). I do love this lens for daytime use and it is a very good for video on my 7D. 30 second shot at 4.0 1600 ISO, tracked.

Your kit lens is perfectly capable of capturing the Milky Way with no problem !! There's no need to buy a "fast" lens since most of them still need to be stopped down to f4 or so.

I know the crop factor is a bit diffrent between Nikon than Canon, but here's a photo of the Milky Way shot using my Nikon D7100 and a Nikon 17-55mm at 24mm f4, ISO1600, 30 sec.
