FZ1000 Freezes Up

My month old one, used quite a bit to experiment, has about 1/2 dozen times
given me a "Turn camera off and on" message.
Did that and it worked fine afterward, didn't have to take out battery.

Will have to watch this while still under warranty.
That most often seems to be an error due to mechanical issues (e.g. lens cap string too tight).

LOL..seriously? Are not all lens cap strings that came with the camera the same length?
Ha. Sure - they're all the same length, but if you turn the cap so the string lies across the front of the camera, it'll fuss when you turn it on.
I thought the FZ1000 didn't come with a lens cap tether?!! And if not, then no, there's no guarantee that they're all the same length!

You learn something new every time you press the shutter

I have a FZ1000 and every time I hit the play button the camera freezes. I cannot update the firmware because you need to hit the play button to installe the firmware. And the one year warranty is gone. Any suggestion ?

I have a similar problem with my GX1. It seems to be related to the state of charge on the battery. If anyone else has this problem try testing in like this.

At 80% or so battery charge, I get a lock up, and it requires a reboot by removing and reinstalling the battery. Updated firmware, and a fresh battery didn't fix it. Only a freshly charged battery allows it to work properly and only then briefly. I'm debating buying the AC adapter to see if I can use it in a fixed mount mode. Not worth repair as a used one is cheaper than Panasonic repair.

I suspect it is a minor component on a circuit board creating a minor short that quickens battery drain. If I had a circuit diagram I could possible figure it out. But it's not worth the time. I'll be selling mine for parts, or holding it for parts.

Hi everyone,

I just had this exact same thing happen to mine. I bough it new about a month ago. Probably have about 5000 pics on it.

What was possibly a factor is temperature?? I was sitting inside with the widow open to capture some bird feeder shots. Yes, I was using auto tracking. Yes the camera froze while trying to focus. But, yes, at first the manual focus worked but then all locked up. This happened twice within 5 minutes with only battery removal resolving it. I thought maybe the fact that it's about 20 degrees out and the camera was right in the window opening contributed but now that I think of it, that seems unlikely and unreasonable.

I will have to double check my paperwork and make sure I register etc. everything I need to. I have heard NOTHING good about Panasonic service and am very wary of going down that path. So for now, I will probably cross my fingers and see how it goes. If it gets to be more of a reproducible problem, I suppose I will consider service. The firmware says 2.2 so I will double check to see that it's the latest.

Has anyone had any new experiences lately with this?

Thanks,
Ken

I've not had a recurrence of the problem since I've stopped using focus tracking

Thanks Sherm. It's really a shame that you cant use such a cool feature. But if you're ok with that that's ok too. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it and my warranty status because I will be using this camera for many concerts and so far that tracking feature has been a fun feature.

My recollection is that it worked ok as long as the camera could track the object, but if it drifted out of the display the camera would get confused and lock.

I have had the "freezing up" problem with two FZ 1000s. Only 6 months into two cameras! Same situation with camera freezing up while shooting and then having to remove and reinstall battery to restore normal function. A big problem no matter when it happens as I'm always capturing a shot that should not be interrupted by this issue! I am working with repair center. Hopefully, they will send me a camera that works!!

Are you by any chance using the AF Tracking feature?
