I am looking for a GPS solution that does not require me to use my phone or sync coordinates via computer etc but rather as a device I can attach to the camera that Automatically writes GPS and heading data to the image file.

Would you have any suggestions on GPS products?

Thank you

Search for gps data logger (hardware) and gps photo tagger (software)

This may get your started: link, e.g. see the comment about wintec and geosetter.

There are no devices that will work in-camera for Sony, and all solutions will require you to upload the GPS log on the computer and then the software tools will write into the EXIF of your images.

Why not data log on your cell phone, (lots of apps for that)?

I have been using one of these with the A7R and Nex cameras for the last couple years now. It works quite well.

You turn on the device and it would record the timing and locations for you. Once you are ready to place these into your photo, a free software would incorporate that info into your JPG photos.

GPS on camera has been a problem for me for years. Plenty of options for large and compact cameras but nothing in the middle. Whilst I haven't had an A7, I've had several NEX cameras and have finally given up on Sony - they just don't seem to get there is a market for mid size cameras with GPS on board for the travel market. (To be fair no other manufacturers do either) Sure you can do a log in apps like Geotagphoto on your iPhone but they are ultimately a hassle unless you take a MacBook. You can use your iPhone but if you want to take serious, raw, geotagged photos when travelling light you are out of luck. Sony's Playmemories app does all the sharing stuff but if that's your focus an iPhone will do that with lots of apps. I've decided to go with Olympus who's Ol Share app whilst doing all the sharing stuff for the mass market also allows you to produce a GPS log on you phone and then push up the coordinates to the camera over private WiFi in the field. Just my 2 cents...

Thank you all.

I was wondering whether this device incoporates the tags into RAW exif data directly?
Yeha I am using a A99 now but thinking of switching to the A7 series for traveling but without GPS, it feels I'm sacrificing more than just weight and size

I use an AMOD GPS data logger. You need to ensure that the date/time of the data logger and the camera are exactly the same. Then you can use one of many software programs to insert the GPS data into your exif files. While this is not as easy as having a built-in GPS (one reason I love my Canon 6D), or an external GPS which records data each time you take a photo, it works well and, in my opinion, is well worth the effort.

May I know which model is it ? There are quite a few of the models by the same bran. Thank you!

Mine is the AMOD AGL 3080 and is about five years old. I know it has been replaced by at least one newer version which has rechargeable batteries (mine took AAA batteries).

Thanks a bunch I'll check it out ! I heard a new Sony camera is on the works in the next 1 month!! Crossing fingers hehe
