D7100 is not stupid and you do not have to set the aperture ring lenses to "the min value e.g. 22 and lock".On lenses with aperture rings, you must lock the lens at it's highest f-stop. So if it's f22, then turn the ring to f22 and turn lock on and never touch it again. Once you have done this, you must change aperture in the camera using the thumbwheels. That's where it's nice to have two wheels like on the D7100, one for aperture, and one for shutter speed. Simple!
Now please patch things up and tell your D7100 it's not stupid and that you love her. ;-)

Cameras are stupid. This one can be in an endless writing situation - without writing.Yes it is stupid, look at the image. Fully on yet the power switch is in the off position. All you need is to go to the menu, F5 "customize command dials" - "aperture setting" - "aperture ring" - [ok]
And voilá, aperture ring on the lens works nicely.

Thanks for the long reply.
The issue was solved by just removing the battery for 30s or so. Problem hasn't reoccurred.
