As I have said before Nikon hasn’t put a DX sensor in a “Pro body” since the D2xs. But here is the current Enthusiast body APS-C sensor line-up by price. I used the B&H USD prices.
Canon 7D MkII – 1,800 – 20 MP, 10 fps
Canon 70D – 1,100 – 20 MP, 7 fps
Samsung NX1 – 1,500 – 28 MP, 15 fps
Nikon D7100 – 1,000 – 24 MP, 6 fps
Sony A77 MkII – 950 – 24 MP, 5 fps
Pentax K3 – 850 – 24 MP, 8.3 fps
So before the Canon 7D MkII announcement – Nikon most likely felt that the D7100 was positioned well to fight the competition with its price and features. Sony & Pentax are lenses limited – not much choice in the 200mm+ range which is required if you want to attract the sports and action shooters that were left out in the move to 35mm sensor consumer bodies.
Then comes Canon – resurrecting the $1800 APS-C sensor body. This release is probably the best news the D400 fans could have asked for – other than the actual D400 release news. But I don’t think Nikon is going to price a D400 any less than the Canon version....so look for a 1800 price rather than a 1600 price on release.
It would be interested in see how many people here will pay the 1800 price for a 7D MkII type camera in an F-mount.
But it would be interesting if Nikon just up the spec on the D7100 with faster processor, faster fps and a bigger buffer – priced at 1,200 USD to out flank the 7D MkII – basically attack it on price with a consumer body.
How many people are really willing to pay a $600 premium for a tougher body if the features matches or is a little lower than the top body if the lens selection is about the same at the long end?
Don't shoot the messenger but in August this year the wait could be over...

D810 style body, 24MPx, 8+fps, stunning AF & GPS build in for me please. Will go nicely with my new 300f4-PF.
