Don't shoot the messenger but in August this year the wait could be over...

D810 style body, 24MPx, 8+fps, stunning AF & GPS build in for me please. Will go nicely with my new 300f4-PF.

"Nikon's response was that they will release a competitor to the Canon 7D Mark II:"

It's not coming in March, that's for the D7200 so Nikon's next launch window traditionally has been August - including the original D300.

And how do you infer "August" from that cryptic non-message?

Your post mis-sells just the same as nikonrumors is mis-selling. Do you feel you really need to do this for the attention?

6fps is not "Pro DX". It's a consumer-grade specification. Such an update wouldn't advance Nikon's cause against either Canon's 70D or 7D-II.

The signs are Nikon does not like tackling the $1300+ market with a specialist DX, and that's that. It's $1200 DX or $2000 FX. They have some odd marketing guy who seems to think high price and crop sensor are incongruous and that the price ranges of DX and FX must not overlap. It's thinking worthy of a camera-fiddling amateur.

the D7200 spec,s were from last December , and were not confirmed ,the timing of the D7200 after the show, and the fact that Nikon (apparently) claimed they would respond to the Canon , could mean that they have diliberately held the new D7200 and use it as thier response .

as I said ,the specs so far were a mere rumour back in december , we have nothing much to go on ,but if the sensor is a newly designed 24mp and not just a rehash of the D7100 sensor , combined with a new "D750" style body , with flip screen (yuch) expeed 4 , better AF etc. etc... ,the New D7200 could well be much more than just an incrimental upgrade , and have enough to compete favourably with Canon's new model. there was no mention in Nikons statement regarding "pro" model .

lets wait a few weeks and all will be revealed .

The D610 is $1,500 . Not much of a gap for an in-between Dx pro camera.

Maybe. It's not an unreasonable POV either: a Dx camera at a similar price point than a Fx camera may not sell in enough quantities to justify its development.

The Nikon D7200 will be officially announced in the next few weeks, most likely before March 13, 2015. These are the only set of rumored specifications I received back in December:
  • New 24MP APS-C sensor
  • Nikon D750 styled body with a tilting screen
  • Expeed 4 processor
  • MultiCAM 3500DX2 autofocus system
  • 51 AF points
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • 6fps
  • Buffer: 16 RAW+JPG
  • Video: 1080p @60 and 720p @120 (not sure about 4k)
  • Video aperture will be adjustable during live view
what post are you reading? this looks like a totally believable camera given nikon's current track: another consumer, plastic toy.

You need to look down in the comments of NR for a better translation than Peter provides at the bottom of his post. There will be a 7D Mark II competitor. Obviously this is a deliberate leak.

As I have said before Nikon hasn’t put a DX sensor in a “Pro body” since the D2xs. But here is the current Enthusiast body APS-C sensor line-up by price. I used the B&H USD prices.

Canon 7D MkII – 1,800 – 20 MP, 10 fps

Canon 70D – 1,100 – 20 MP, 7 fps

Samsung NX1 – 1,500 – 28 MP, 15 fps

Nikon D7100 – 1,000 – 24 MP, 6 fps

Sony A77 MkII – 950 – 24 MP, 5 fps

Pentax K3 – 850 – 24 MP, 8.3 fps

So before the Canon 7D MkII announcement – Nikon most likely felt that the D7100 was positioned well to fight the competition with its price and features. Sony & Pentax are lenses limited – not much choice in the 200mm+ range which is required if you want to attract the sports and action shooters that were left out in the move to 35mm sensor consumer bodies.

Then comes Canon – resurrecting the $1800 APS-C sensor body. This release is probably the best news the D400 fans could have asked for – other than the actual D400 release news. But I don’t think Nikon is going to price a D400 any less than the Canon version....so look for a 1800 price rather than a 1600 price on release.

It would be interested in see how many people here will pay the 1800 price for a 7D MkII type camera in an F-mount.

But it would be interesting if Nikon just up the spec on the D7100 with faster processor, faster fps and a bigger buffer – priced at 1,200 USD to out flank the 7D MkII – basically attack it on price with a consumer body.

How many people are really willing to pay a $600 premium for a tougher body if the features matches or is a little lower than the top body if the lens selection is about the same at the long end?

i mean, they say there will be a 7D2 competitor, but i'm not entirely convinced that's a different camera. i've lost all faith in nikon; i don't think they understand why people want a camera like this, and what it is exactly that they want.

For what it's worth and just my $0.02...

The D300s was announced July 30 2009

Since then Nikon has released:

D3100, D7000, D5100, D4, D800, D800e, D3200, D600, D5200, D7100, D610, D5300, DF, D3300, D4s, D810, D750, D5500, D810a,

Rumored: D7200 3/2015

If the D7200 is included, Nikon will have released 10 DX cameras and 10 FX cameras since the D300s was announced.

If the D7200 comes to market initially around $1500.00 (maybe?) and as someone else pointed out the price of a new D610 is currently (less than) $1500.00 USD at what price point will a D400 make sense for Nikon?

Will we see a D400 @ about the same price or more as that of a D610? In August, when they might announce a D5 and ~six months after releasing the D7200?

My interpretation of what was said in the interview: "Q: Your DX-line appears to be targeted at entry-level users. Any chance of a DX-flagship? A:There will be something in the class of our competitor's 7D2 in the future." - Note: translation from Nikon Rumors Comments section . - Doesn't sound very convincing to me that a D400 (true D300 DX replacement) will be released - perhaps the D7200 is all that is referred to in that interview?

It depends on how long they take for me. I could have gone to Canon for the 7DII by August.

It also depends on the specs of a 'D400'. Does it equal or surpass the 7DII?

If I'm willing to pay Canon for the 7DII, then I'm more than willing to pay Nikon for a 'D400' because it would negate the need to possibly sell cameras and lenses and replace with Canon gear. I doubt a warmed D7*** body, potentially with a flip out LCD, will be enough for me, but until you see the specs, images and reviews of any camera, its only speculation.
