Lately my fairly new R2000 has been printing fine and then it will not feed the Epson paper (doesn't matter the size) and will give the message "media out or not loaded correctly" and the box that pops up says:

To print on roll paper or Fine Art paper:
Insert the paper into the rear manual feed slot as far as it will go, until feeding starts automatically.

To print on CD/DVDs or other paper types:
Load the CD/DVD tray or paper correctly, and then press the Paper button on the printer.

To cancel printing:
Click the [Cancel] button.
It almost seems to me that it thinks I am using roll paper or some other non-paper medium. I have looked at the manual (minimal as it is) and can't seem to see what is wrong.

I would appreciate any ideas. This printer is kind of driving me crazy with things that happen to it compared to my R2400 that ran for years with no problems at all.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I apologize for the obvious question but you do have the correct paper path chosen in the driver?

No need to apologize! The printer frequently works correctly the same as always and then sometimes it gets the error message above. I am not changing anything when it works or doesn't work or from before when it always worked. I seem to be able to fix it by pushing the lit-up button that has the trash can on it -- which turns the button off -- and moving the paper holder a bit and reseating the paper. I think it may have to do with the rollers somehow. Thanks for your help!

I have the same issue as you do on my R3000 at times and cleaning the paper pickup roller solves the problem.

Bob P.
Bob -- Would it be much trouble to tell me how you clean the rollers or direct me to a link? The minimal manual for the R2000 just says to run some plain paper through the printer but that hasn't fixed the problem. I searched on the internet too for roller cleaning but didn't find anything that helpful. Thanks.

Cathy
BUT you said this:

"To print on roll paper or Fine Art paper:
Insert the paper into the rear manual feed slot as far as it will go, until feeding starts automatically.

To print on CD/DVDs or other paper types:
Load the CD/DVD tray or paper correctly, and then press the Paper button on the printer.

That notice is SPECIFIC and only comes up when you have chosen the " Manual Rear Feeder" and then tried to feed through the top feeder.

A dirty roller would have a effect on paper transport as in not picking up the leading edge of the paper, skewing paper or simply sending the straight through the printer with no printing.

You getting a paper feed location error.

However cleaning your feed/transport rollers should be done at least by monthly.

On cleaning the feed rollers, you can use rubbing alcohol ( not as good but ok in a pinch ) or use a dedicated roller cleaner. Bob has on particular brand that he uses quite successfully. I am sure he will give you the source.

You can use Q-tips to physically clean them.

I used to take a sheet of matte somewhat thick paper and spray cleaner on the bottom 50% of the sheet. Load it and press the paper advance button. The wet portion picks up all the crud you've been building up on the rollers and dry half absorbs any remaining fluid.

Thanks, Joe. If somehow I have chosen the manual rear feeder, how would I do that? Is it a button on the printer or in Photoshop? I haven't changed anything and it works sometimes, most of the time actually, with me changing nothing. Isn't another possibility that my printer is malfunctioning and coming up with this error when it shouldn't? And of course it's certainly possible I'm doing something wrong too. I just don't know what or how it could have happened. And then all works well for a while with no changes.

I will definitely try cleaning the rollers too. That sounds worth doing.

Thanks much for taking the time to help with this problem. I really appreciate it.

Cathy

Soak a matte or plain sheet of paper with alcohol, have a blank print ready to print for that paper size, and work fast as the alcohol dries extremely quick.

I'm not sure if the R2000 has a way to eject a sheet so you don't need to set up a print.

Maybe Joe can help here as he has a R2000.

If this works then we can talk about a better pickup roller cleaning fluid.

Good luck!

Sure I know that. That's how I print from Photoshop. But I use preset saved templates and they all say the print source is "sheet". That's why I thought perhaps you were saying there was some other way on the printer perhaps to tell it you wanted roll paper, etc.

I've been using these templates for some time and haven't changed them and this error has just started happening. I still feel it is indicative of either a printer failure of some sort or perhaps that the printer is getting confused because my printer roller needs cleaning and thinks I have put in the wrong kind of paper.

Thanks much for telling me how to clean the roller. I will give that a try and see if it fixes the problem. It's an intermittent problem so I may not know immediately.

Ok then it is possibly a result of the rollers being dirty but I've never experienced that with mine, even when I neglect it for a while.

The printer has no idea what paper you are feeding it at it only relies on the paper choice you pick. Some paper choices demand a certain paper feed path and will expect it. If you do not feed thorugh that expected paper path it will reject it.

Good luck with the roller cleaning and please let us know your results.

Another way to print with standard settings using Photoshop is using Actions. When you create an Action in Photoshop using the Print dialog all the settings are saved except the optional 'Scale 100%' setting, so you have to make sure the exact pixel dimensions of the image for printing are correct. This can be done by first calculating the pixel dimensions and then input them in the 'File/Automate/Fit Image' setting.

So:

- Create a new Action and name it for the type and size of the paper

- Use 'Fit Image' to set the exact pixel dimensions to be used in the print. For A4 I use 2414x3402 pixels @300 ppi printing with a white border (printer is set to 1440x720 dpi)

- Print the file using the print dialog using the needed settings including the right profile and such

- (Close the file if wanted)

- Stop recording the Action

From that moment on you only have to click the 'play' arrow of the action to have the file open in Photoshop printed with the saved settings.

You can also create a 'Droplet' from the action, which is a standalone executable containing the Action. Then you can just drop a file on it from the Explorer/Finder and it will be printed in the same manner. I use this method to print from a self-written program. Has been full proof for thousands of images.

N.B. You need different Actions for Portrait and Landscape orientated files.

correctly. Thus the first time the paper is picked up and pulled into the the printer before it is back tracked slightly, the paper edge sensor located under the print head doesn't see the paper leading edge where it should be and rejects the sheet. You can watch this happen on a R3000 by looking at the the pickup roller operation. As soon as you clean the pick up roller the problem/sheet ejection goes away.

I not saying that this is definitely the OP's problem, but worth a try seeing that it's intermittent, as what I normally see also. It's also a larger problem with glossy papers.

Bob P.

You all asked me to report back and I'm happy to say that since I ran a piece of alcohol-soaked paper through the rollers on the printer, I have not had the problem anymore of the printer ejecting paper without printing.

Thanks again for all who wrote to help with this. It was much appreciated!

That's great.

Now make sure you do that about once every couple of months as a preventative maintenance routine.

There are other things you should also do about as often.

Look up my R2000 maintenance video on my video channel below!

Joe

Unfortunately right after I wrote my message yesterday, the printer started doing the same thing again -- failing to grab the paper and just ejecting it rather than printing it. I guess I'll have to look at your video and see what else I need to do and perhaps do the alcohol thing again too.

Anyway thanks for all your help.

when loading large single sheets through the top. I can never see anything wrong, but this thread indicates some things to check or do. Most of the suggested causes seem to relate to the paper not being gripped securely at the start - the slightest movement or insecure grip could pull the paper away from the initial grip-it position

With a large sheet much of it lays naturally towards the back, and the sheet is lowered/dropped onto the pinch rollers, which are closed at this time, so the rollers don't have a secure grip on the paper, as gravity is trying to drop/pull the paper out backwards.

What I plan to try next time is:

lift the paper's free end up by hand, clear of the pinch rollers,
open then close the rollers (which resets the 'loading' status),
lower the paper on to the closed rollers,
keep holding the sheet's free/bottom end up until the paper is drawn into the printing position,
so gravity is trying to put the weight of the sheet into the rollers, rather than trying to pull it over the back and out.

I think the 'Paper error' & 'Load paper correctly' messages are infuriating rather than helpful.

I did load it correctly - and if I do it the same way again it will probably be OK.
