I am considering making the switch and been looking at the Nikon glass.

Currently I have the following cameras:
  • 1Ds MkIII, 6D, 60D.
And lenses currently in use:
  • Sigma 8mm f3.5 EX DG circular fisheye
  • Sigma 15mm f2.8 EX diagonal fisheye
  • Samyang 14mm f2.8
  • Samyang 8mm f3.5 for the cropper
  • Samyang 35mm f1.4
  • Canon 16-35 f2.8 L II
  • Canon 24-70 f2.8 L
  • Canon 100mm f2.8 macro w/ collar
  • Canon 135mm f135 L
  • Canon 400mm f5.6 L
  • Canon MP-E 65 mm 1-5x macro
  • Canon EF-S 18-55 STM for the cropper
  • Canon 2x II Teleconverter
I am looking to get a pair of D750s or a 810 and a 750.

To begin, I would need the following glass:
  • 8 mm circular fisheye. Sigma is a good one.
  • 14 mm Samyang is a good one if you get a good copy
  • 24-70 f2.8 Nikon.
  • 35 f1.4 Nikon or Sigma Art series. Opinions?
  • 85 f1.4 Nikon or Sigma. Opinions?
  • 100 macro. Nikon or Sigma. Opinions?
The rest I would see in time. Been itching for that lovely Nikon wide zoom 14-24 f2.8...

As to the 400 mm f5.6, is there a "standard" choice for Nikon in that focal length? Something light would be nice.

Has anyone fitted the Canon MP-E 65 mm to a Nikon camera? It is all manual anyway so maybe a simple adapter exists?

Thanks for all the advice!

Thanks, I am just keeping my options open. I might wait and see what the 6D MkII will be like. If it moves a little higher up in the rank (like 70D did) AND has a significantly improved sensor I might get two of those.

Stuff accumulates over time. I could see getting some core glass and start over with Sony sensors.

I would go 810 and a 750.

Haven't used either of those lenses.
  • 24-70 f2.8 Nikon.
Good lens.
  • 35 f1.4 Nikon or Sigma Art series. Opinions?
Haven't used.
  • 85 f1.4 Nikon or Sigma. Opinions?
I have the Rokinon (Samyang) and it is a good lens, but the Nikon may be sharper.
  • 100 macro. Nikon or Sigma. Opinions?
I have the Nikon 105mm f/2.8 Micro VR and am not thrilled by it.
The rest I would see in time. Been itching for that lovely Nikon wide zoom 14-24 f2.8...

Longest lens I have is the Nikon 300mm f/4. A decent lens, but not the sharpest tele they make. Nikon's big fast tele's. are sharp, heavy, and expensive.
Has anyone fitted the Canon MP-E 65 mm to a Nikon camera? It is all manual anyway so maybe a simple adapter exists?
The sensor to lens flange distance on a Nikon is longer than on a Canon. Because if this you can adapt Nikon lenses to Canon bodies, but not so easy for the other way around. You need optics in the adaptor if you want to focus at infinity. Such optics tend to degrade the image quality.

  • Canon 135mm f135 L

Agreed - I've had great results with it on my D800e and D810. The only real issue is distortion
  • 24-70 f2.8 Nikon.
Really great/exceptional between about 28/30-60, a bit more average at the wide and long ends
  • 35 f1.4 Nikon or Sigma Art series. Opinions?
Sigma - incredible lens. If weight matters get the Nikon F1.8G - it is tiny (and very light) and gives you 90-95% of the Sigma optically as well as being a smigen better than the 35 F1.4G optically (it loses out in build quality though)
  • 85 f1.4 Nikon or Sigma. Opinions?
Personally I had a bad experience with the 85 F1.4G and bought the 85 F1.8G instead. Even if you ignore the price the F1.8 is an exceptional lens. Never used the Sigma.
  • 100 macro. Nikon or Sigma. Opinions?
Nikon 105 micro - really lovely lens. Zeiss also offer a very good macro lens.
The rest I would see in time. Been itching for that lovely Nikon wide zoom 14-24 f2.8...
It is good, but don't expect it to beat an exceptional prime (the Zeiss 21 is still my favourite UWA).

I'm not really a telephoto prime guy, but I can confirm the Nikon 80-400 VR II is very, very good.
Has anyone fitted the Canon MP-E 65 mm to a Nikon camera? It is all manual anyway so maybe a simple adapter exists?
Sorry, no idea.

That is true. I found a pretty decent LR profile for it though, seems to work to satisfaction.
  • 24-70 f2.8 Nikon.

It would be an allrounder, probably excellent for that. I have the oft maligned EF 24-70 L and find it a brilliant performer. Maybe I have a good copy. But usually these modern fast zooms are more than adequate for many, many jobs.

I would probably go for the Sigma. I value good coma correction above many things for this lens.

The 85 f1.8G sounds like a winner. I should check it out in detail.
  • 100 macro. Nikon or Sigma. Opinions?
Nikon 105 micro - really lovely lens. Zeiss also offer a very good macro lens.
Most of these are really good. I would pick between Sigma and Nikon I think. Zeiss is too much for me for this lens. Plus at times I like AF.

Nope and I would probably make do with the Samyang 14 for quite some time. 14 is a really good FL for me.

I'm not really a telephoto prime guy, but I can confirm the Nikon 80-400 VR II is very, very good.
It would be multipurpose too. It probably also takes a converter pretty well (the usual caveats like AF noted) ?

It is a manual 1-5x macro lens that does not focus to infinity at all. Must google it some more, somebody has probably hacked it to a Nikon body. Hmm...

Thanks for your input! (y)

It, is, indeed, possible to adapt the Canon 65mm macro to a Nikon body. It was discussed in one of the sections of the DPR forums. It may take some searching.

If you don't mind manual focus, the Zeiss 100mm lens is very nice, in my experience.

Nikon doesn't really have anything in the 400mm prime telephoto department that could be called "affordable", but they do have the Nikkor 300mm f/4D IF-ED AF-S which is affordable. Slap the Nikon TC 14E II on it and you've got 420mm at f/5.6 for under $2,000.00. That is what I use for my wildlife photography and get very good results with it. Personally I think Nikon should really come out with an affordable 400mm prime, but.. who knows if and when that will ever happen. For now the 300mm is great.

Here is my 300mm f/4D album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jpivkova/sets/72157630231411032/

Those that say "420mm" in the visible EXIF info were taken with the TC and those without will simply say "300mm". I don't care what anyone says, this lens is SHARP even with the TC.
