Hi,

First post here and am hoping to get some clarification on Manfrotto tripod models, specifically:

055XPROB
055XPRO3

It seems to me that the 055XPRO3 is the newest (best?) version in the 055 line. According to the Manfrotto site, it says the 055XPRO3 "REPLACES PART # 055XDB , 055XPROB , 055XB".

I'm slightly confused as this newest 055XPRO3 is almost $50 cheaper then the 055XPROB. As a rule, newer and better isn't generally less expensive, or am I missing something?

I plan on using this 055XPRO3 with the 808RC4 head, Canon t5i, along with the battery grip. The combined weight of these three is 5lbs, 6oz, which should be fine.

I do plan on making use of the 90 degree column and wondered how far out I can extend the column with this weight with no possible problems?

I am leaning towards the newer 055XPRO3, just want to try and make sure (as sure as I can anyway) that this is the best of the 055 bunch, carbon fiber aside, despite the fact that it's a good deal cheaper than it's predecessor, the 055XPROB.

I appreciate any help or insight, thanks!

John

From when I've found out when i was looking at getting them, the 055XPRO3 is the newer version. One of the main differences is that the swivel mechanism is more built into the tripod than ontop of the tripod in the 055XPROB. So if weirdly enough the 055XPRO3 is cheaper than get that one.

I don't think there is a "055XPRO3". Perhaps you were thinking of the "MT055XPRO3"

The newly designed version is the MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod. List price $239, B&H Price $182.
  • "MT" indicates it is the new version. Older versions had no prefix.
  • "055" indicates that this is an 055 series tripod. ("190" would indicate the smaller/lighter 190 series)
  • "X" indicates Aluminum (carbon fiber would be "CX")
  • "PRO" indicates that this tripod ha the 90° center column mechanism, allowing the center column to be oriented vertically or horizontally. (non-"PRO" models have vertical-only center columns).
  • "3" indicates the legs have 3 sections. ("4" would indicate 4 section legs)
The Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Aluminum Tripod is the older design ($229 at B&H)

The main changes with the MT line are:

a different mechanism for rotating the center column
  • MT version has an "Easy Link" connector for accessories.
  • MT version has a rotating bubble level.
  • misc changes to hinges, levers, etc.
By some measures, the older model scores better. The 055XPROB weighs a 1/4 lb less, and extends about 4 inches taller.

The newer model folds to a smaller size, and carries more weight.

wow, these names are such gibberish--makes me ill!
