I am in the process of buying my first digital camera and have chosen the s602 zoom based on reviews. My parents are pitching in on the camera so the cheeper the better to them. They keep seeing the ads in all the papers for the Fuji 3800 for $399, and don't see why we are paying $175 more for the s602, when it has the same optical zoom and MPs as the 3800. I would like to know why you guys think the s602 is so much better than the 3800 so my parents will quit buging me.
Thanks for the help,
Nick

The 3800 is essentially a very nice point and shoot camera. While it has the same optical zoom and the same MP count (however, the 602 offers a 6 Mp mode as well), it lacks in control. The 602 allows for full manual control of the camera, aperture and shutter priority modes, ful control of the ISO and exposure compensation.....in short, the 602 offers everything a top of the line 35mm SLR would offer (minus TTL flash control). The 602 also allows the use of an external flash, dual media (both smartmedia as well as compacf flash/microdrives). You are getting a camera that can grow with you as a photographer with the 602. The 3800 is very capapble, the 602 is just much more so.

The manual control is more important than photo quality, with manual control you can shoot in almost every circumstances. And of course you can buy in http://www.buydig.com which offers $500 (I saw this price last month) for S602, but the price of S602 is surprisingly increasing during this month...

Don't buy any camera which have no enough manual control, what good of anything else is when you can't shoot it sucessfully?

Plain and simple, the two cameras are completely different!

I had a 2800, tested and returned a 3800 and now own the 602!

Skip the 3800 and go for the 602!

for outdoor photography on a sunny day i think the two cameras would be pretty similar, assuming the 3800 is as smart or smarter than me and my 602, but if you ever plan on taking flash photography then you got to have a camera that accepts external flash, taking indoor pics of people using the on board flash of any camera cannot compare to an external flash bounced off of a ceiling, wall, etc.. In my opinion of course.

602 seems perfect except it's so bulky! The world would be a much better place if only 602 were as small as 3800. :(

I have a 3800 and I know the S602 is a better camera in every respect, but as Pauly says, and I believe this as well by seeing pictures taken by other people with the S602: both cameras during the day take similar pictures. What Pauly says about the flash is true, but I recently bought a slave flash and it works pretty well, and you can add as many as you want since they work at the same time the on-board flash lights up. You can bounce it and put it anywhere you want in a room. There are many features which the S602 has that the 3800 doesn't and I can live without them, for example manual focus, longer exposures and shutter priority, but the one feature I would really want to have in my 3800 is higher ISOs to be able to take photos of moving objects in low light without using flash.

Pikler,

I just got my S602 from directsource.us for around $475. It might be more than the $399 for the 3800 but I think that it is well worth it.
