Hello all,

As much as very similar, the d800 and the d810 bodies differs a bit in shape and dimension.

I have tested my new d810 with a battery grip made for the d800 and it doesn't properly fit.

I am quite surprised that Nikon made the d810 compatible with the MB-D12 which is not.

I mean, it does work but it doesn't fit and so it makes it useless to have a weather sealed camera.

Am I the only one who noticed this?

Thank you for your time.

M

Have a quick look at the model number on the front of the body. Does it look like someone changed a "6" into an "8"??

Just kidding. My MB-D12 from my 800e fits perfectly on my 810. Any better and it would have had to been custom made. Welcome to the forum.

My grip from my D800 fits and works perfectly on the D810. It's not a Nikon, thought-- it's a DSTE.

I've seen posts from others that indicate that Nikon's grip is working for them on the D810 as well.

I'm using the one that was on my d800e and it fits very well. Its a Nikon grip.

My Nikon battery grip taken straight from my D800 is a very bad fit on the D810 I have just purchased.

There is gap between camera and grip and it loosens itself very quickly to the point that I am not using it at the moment until I can get it to Nikon Singapore to get their opinion.

There was a little slop between my D800 and grip when I owned both. I solved it by placing a tiny rubber washer around the metal guide rod. Never had a problem with movement after that!

Sorry about your issue. But I cannot corroborate your experience. Mine fits like a glove (Nikon OEM grip) Your conclusion that Nikon changed the body shape of the D810 is a bit premature. Are you using a genuine Nikon grip?

Actually I don't think that the Nikon battery grip makes a totally water sealed camera. The only way to get that is with a professionally gripped camera.

My MB-D12 grip (Nikon) that was on my D800 fits my D810 perfectly. No issue here.

Actually the lower border of the d810 differs from the d800e.

I'll upload a comparison image found of the web, and some images of a grip mounted on my d810.

It is visible that it does not perfectly fits as it used to fit in my d800e, especially in the section under the "FX" logo

Any ideas?

Notice how even a clone grip perfectly fits the d800.

Funny, I didn't notice. Now it'll bug me :-(

I think the question "Are you a photographer or a technician " at the foot of InTheMist's page is a rhetorical question. It appears on all his posts, and was not directed at you. Just a reminder to us all to concentrate on the photography more and not get too weighed down with equipment considerations!

Welcome to the forum. Have fun with your D810 even if the grip looks a bit untidy!

Cheers,

IainD

It fits exactly like the 800 shown here. Maybe you got a prototype! :-D Or maybe someone sold you a knock-off grip as a genuine Nikon grip. Did you check and see if there's something in the mounting hole or something on the bottom of the body stopping the wheel from closing the gap?

If not, you need to go to a store and try your grip on another body, and a different grip on your body. You have to start eliminating possibilities.

Those areas that you have photographed in an attempt to show how it doesn't fit have nothing to do with weather sealing. Take the grip off the camera and look at the grip and then look at the bottom of the camera. The ONLY weather sealing on the grip is the little rubber boot that is around the electrical interface. The only weather sealing on the camera bottom is the rubber bottom itself, which actually protects nothing from water damage.

My grip fits tight on my D810. Many others have expressed the same. I have no clue as to why your grip seems wobbly. As long as the camera can settle all the way into the grip (mine does) so that the rubber on the bottom of the camera can be tightened securely and flat against the grip (mine does) then you should have all the weather sealing that the grip offers.

I think that was with the d7000 we had the slop problem.

Maybe the guide hole is to shallow or the guide rod to long. If so, filing the guide rod down a little would not hurt it

Nope, tried with another grip (Nikon original) and it has the same problem.

Nikon operator told me that they aware of this issue.

Could you please post an image of your d810 with the grip?

Thank you

Actually Nikon, after 45m in a call, just confirmed that they are working on a new battery grip as the current is not fitting the d810 body.
