I was saddened to read that Senator Howard Baker died today at 88. Though we are from different political parties, he was one of the old school politicians who put country before party and knew how to work across the political divide. He was also an avid, excellent photographer, which is why I'm posting this here.

And not to be confused with Jim Baker, key strategist in shutting down the Florida recount. Two very different people, this from Wikipedia on Howard Baker:

"Known in Washington, D.C. as the "Great Conciliator", Baker was often regarded as one of the most successful senators in terms of brokering compromises, enacting legislation, and maintaining civility. A story is sometimes told of a reporter telling a senior Democratic senator that privately, a plurality of his Democratic colleagues would vote for Baker for President of the United States."

Different times.

Thank you for posting the link to his photography, never knew about that before today.

Thanks for posting. I too didn't know about his photography which is very good indeed. I'm so depressed that there are almost none like him today.

I am very sorry to hear this. Howard Baker was a fine man who earned the respect of others, including me.

About 34 years ago, I met him while in Las Vegas for the Photo Marketing Association exhibition. I am from GA and he told a small group of us a funny story about how right after Reagan became president, Reagan had a meet & greet with State Governors and invited Senators and Representatives from each state to join in.

George Busby was the Democratic Governor of Georgia at the time, and also an avid photographer who usually hosted Ansel Adams at the Governor's Mansion when Adams visited Atlanta. Busby was a regular customer at a camera store I managed.

Anyway, Busby and Baker were in back of this large hall, eagerly chatting about photography and mostly ignoring Reagan's speech. Their enthusiasm eventually got out of hand and Reagan literally got onto Baker and Busby like a couple of unruly children, telling them to hush up and be quiet! I still get a chuckle when thinking about that.

I wish more politicians of both parties had the integrity and goodwill of Howard Baker. Our country would be better for it. FWIW, I tend to liberal/progressive views on many issues but probably would have voted for Howard Baker had he ever run for president.

Cheers, and thanks for posting this notice.

I have thought about Howard Baker many times over the last couple of decades. I, too am from a different political party, yet I have tremendous respect for him, and his approach to public service. Nice to know he liked photography as well.

RIP

Wonderful compositions.

Jim. Did not know "The Great One" was a photographer.........

What a shame. Rest in peace, Sen. Baker. Beautiful photographs. I wish today's generation would learn a thing or two from the elder statesmen. We have a lot of politicians, but almost no leaders. From my own state, Sen. Richard Lugar was a leader like him, and now he's been "retired" by a primary.
