Our local Aussie store is selling the Sony A3500 (slight variant of the A3000) at a really good price. I currently own a Canon G15 which is nice but I've always wanted a large sensor camera as well but finances are limited as I'm a pensioner. My question relates to the Sony as the kit lens is only f4 at the wide end while the Canon (much smaller sensor 1/1.7) is f1.8. i.e over 2 stops brighter. I gather that if I'm shooting in low light with the A3500 at say iso 1600, the G15 would only be at iso 400, all things being equal. Also the A3500 lens doesn't have optical stabilisation. Do you think the A3500 would still be better in low light?

The lens is two stops brighter on the G15, as you pointed out. The image stabilization also provides a couple of stops (maybe more)..you can shoot at slower shutter speeds and hence use lower a lower ISO. Others, smarter about this than I, might disagree but I think the help you are getting on the G15 from the brighter lens and from the image stabilization should be more than a match for the slightly larger sensor.

Hi Robmac07,

I know your post was 2 months ago,,,shame you have not had a reply.!! Today JB HIFI are selling the a3500 for an unbelievable $299. Just thinking in comparison to you Canon G15 is tha age of the technology some 14 years later it must be the a3500 BETTER CAMERA. But the only fullback is that you have to keep buying lenses. I myself use a Hybrid a Lumix fz200 and a Lumix fz1000, and found these work fine for me. But they are expensive units..Good luck you may already have an upgrade by noe...cheers
