I have owned may cameras from a Kodak Pony 125 to Minolta SRX 101, and many point and shoot digital cameras, to a Sony DSX HX1, but this Sony camera is remarkable! I am impressed by all the photographic effects that can be done with this camera. The incredible resolution of photos with this camera are just impressive! This camera is worth every penny! It has so many features, hot shoe flash, auto view finder, ability to attach lens filters, (55mm) just an excellent camera!

Hi,

Can you tell me if this camera has the ability to add effects such as watercolor or Illustration after the picture has been taken? Or do you have to be in that mode before you shoot to get the effect? The HX300 has the ability to apply effects after, but I heard that the 400 doesn't, and I want to make sure before I decide. Thanks.

Well I certainly agree with you or I wouldn't have bought or kept an HX400V, myself. It seems that not many people, especially those who use other brands, have bothered to notice the great improvements made in this model. A lot of cynics discount Sony cameras, just because they produce the best ones and they seem to resent it. Since I am very cynical, it takes a lot to impress me and I haven't hesitated to sort out the mistakes Sony has made and make my opinions known.

The main problem or perhaps it's a benefit, of this camera, is its complexity in controls and the increased number of setting points and combinations you need to learn and use. I can imagine less experienced buyers of it, who have limited patience, becoming displeased by how much they have to do, to get the best from it. I think that most of those who stick with it, will find that it works better and better, as they discover more of its capabilities and become more familiar with its expanded features.

Regarding special effects like watercoloring, they have been dropped on this model-------you'll have to do those things later, on a computer. I'd never use them and have gladly traded them for an external mike capability. The camera isn't as good as it could be. The option of using XAVC-S at 50 Mbps for 60p video would have been an excellent feature. A headphone output and a slightly larger sensor-------perhaps a "1/1.7-inch", with a reduction to 40X or 25-1,000mm, would have been welcomed by me.

Thanks for verifying that for me. I'm mostly happy with my Canon SX40, but wanted to try a Sony to use the effects. I guess I will have to go with the HX300.

I hope you understand the vast difference between the HX400V and the HX300, before you do that, just to get a few special effects.

I do, which is why I was interested in the 400. But the 300 is better on paper and in several reviews that my current SX40, so it should still be an upgrade. I'm no pro, just mainly landscape, nature and vacation pics. I've been satisfied with the SX40, and I really love the longer zooms. Thanks for your concern and your help. I've benefited from your posts and reviews the last several days.

Would you mind elaborating further. I'm looking to upgrade from the HX100 and thinking about the HX400. How does the Nikon P600 compare image quality and stabilization?

Thanks

Also, I would love to know how its "IQ" compares to Nikon's D7100, which I have. I'm not even sure what a camera's IQ is.

Another question I would love to have answered is whether the one-touch wi-fi connectivity works with the Apple smart products as well as with Android products. I think the description of wi-fi one-touch connectivity is ambiguous re Apple smart products.

The Image Quality of the 400 is good, but it will NOT compare to the 7100... comparing apples with oranges. The connectivity with Apple products is not nearly as fluid as with Android. The literature talks about neat features camera-to-device but the reality is simply that these features are only applicable to non IOS (Apple) equipment. It was/is so cumbersome with my iPhone and iPad that I never use it.
