I am loving the time lapse app on Sony, but find the limitations of total shots as well as mediocre battery life to be disruptive to very long time lapse sessions. Is their a dedicated, or 3rd party ac power adapter that could allow for extended time lapse shooting?

You are looking for a Sony AC-PW20 or 3rd party copy. Personally i went with a used original. Works nicely, but be careful not to overheat your camera (e.g. having it run at 1 shot / second for hours). If you use the timelapse app you are safe i guess.

Sony does have an official AC adapter, but it's ridiculously expensive.

There are 3rd party ones, no experience. I've been pondering about getting one but pretty hesitant about putting cheap ebay junk into a camera this pricey, would not be a happy camper if it got fried by one. I guess I could use the 5N as lab rat.

If anyone has used one, I'd like to hear about it.

Since the a6000 charges via USB can it be left plugged in without having to use the AC adaptor?

No. It only charges while the camera is off. And if you turn the camera on, it uses the battery, not the USB for power. :-(

I bought the Sony AC adapter quite some time ago for my 5n. I have yet to check the compatibility with the A6000, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work. One of these days I'm going to put the A6000 on the AC adapter, connect my smartphone, and go upstairs and wait for the birds to come to the feeder outside the window. Tap to change the focus point, and tap to take a pic.

If you're asking if the camera can be used while charging, no, it can't.

That's a shame, seems like it would have been an easy thing to implement. I knew I couldn't use it when plugged into a PC USB port but I had hoped that just connected to USB power it might work.

I bought an original (I think) from China on e-bay for $35 and it is working well. I've tested it on the 5N, NEX-7 and A7R. The power cord that came with it was so cheap that I didn't trust it and used one from my cable box instead. The original Sony AC adapters have a slot at the bottom of the electronic battery to manage the cord so that you can close the battery door whereas the third party ones don't. The original also doesn't have the problems of the battery indicator flashing low battery. I think they all work OK to a certain extent from the reviews I've read but you will have compromises with the third party alternatives.

If you're nervous about getting a generic adapter, I noticed there's at least one eBay seller listing the official AC-PW20 for $35.99 from Hong Kong:

Looks real... guy has high ratings... <shrug>
This is the one I bought and from this seller. See message above. It arrived in the U.S. after two weeks. They ship a power cord based on your country. The slot on the AC adapter for the power cord has a different connection type compared to the power cord the seller provided, which was only about a foot long. It still works but is quite generic. I noticed my TV cable box had the correct power cord connection so I just swapped the cords and all is fine.

Besides the power cord, the adapter is a Sony original with serial number and the electronic battery has the slot for cord management and it doesn't show battery low like some of the other generic ones do per reviews. It works perfectly on my 5N, NEX-7 and A7R. I ran it for several hours on my 5N doing star trails with no issues.

I just got one of the "official" ones from the ebay seller from Hong kong. http://www.ebay.com/itm/231095137680?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
It seems to work fine, but the battery still draws down and the low battery icon comes on. I've been using the time lapse app, and the camera doesn't turn itself off, so I guess I'm ok? For people with others, does this happen or does the battery never change for you? Mine started at 51% when I turned it on

There is a third party grip in which you can use two batteries.
