Has anyone used Partition Magic software by PowerQuest to partition thier hard drive for setting up a scratch disk for PS7 on Windows XP. Is it easy to use, was any data lost or other problems?

I cannot find clear simple instructions for using Windows XP utilities to manually partition the hard drive myself. What I have found scares me and indicate one needs to have advanced knowledge of working with PC operating system.

Thanks

Hi Ralph,

Partitioning a harddisk is not an easy or safe task to execute. It normally requires you to reformat the harddisk (erase ALL data), and use Fdisk in DOS mode to make new partitions, before re-installing everything including OS.

Fortunately, PartitionMagic is a great help!

Extremely easy to use, and works without reformatting.

Just set aside a certain amount of space for a new partition, and it works its magic. It´s pretty safe too.

Make sure you know about the differences in file allocation sizes. (FAT16, FAT32, NTFS etc).

I acquired PM for making a partition for PS scratch on my DELL 8200 WinXP laptop.

Thanks Mathias,

You confirmed my decision not to try and use Fdisk to partition my hard drive.

I'll give Magic Partition a try. I saw quite few positive customer reviews of the software on Amazon.

You are welcome.

PartitionMagic is quite unique software for doing painless partitioning. Even if you don´t need it often, its very handy to own a copy when you do need it.

Ralph,

I use Partition Magic and it's the best. I'm using W2K but results should be the same with XP. I think any technician worth his salt will have a copy of PM with him. FDISK will be a thing of the past once you use PM.

One nice feature with PM is that once you make your changes, you'll see exactly what the results will be BEFORE actually making the results. Simply selecting OK or CHANGE (or whatever the button's called) will commit the changes. Seeing how resizing or moving or changing (to different file formats, etc.) before actually making those changes helps to confirm weather the changes are correct.

I just got version 8.0 (had been using v 7.0) for $37.99 plus $1.99 s/h (via USPS) from my favorite source of software at http://www.directdeals.com/product.asp?id=304 .

Good price, Stu. I just upgraded to 8.0 (from 6.0) for $39.99. Make
sure you get PM 8.0 for Win XP. I used PM 6.0 for W2k, but XP
requires 8.0.
Thanks very much for your responses. Thats a real good price from directdeals. I ordered PM8.0 last night for $54.95.
