...that's the question I have to ask myself very often when choosing a TC for my Nikon AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 ED IF VR lens. Either it's the 1.4 or it's this - the Nikon AF-S TC-20e Mk III. I tried the x2 on my 70-200mm VRII, it was fine, but only when used at f/10 or f/11 in my opinion, making it a very hit and miss affair with wildlife. When used with the Nikon 300mm f/2.8 it's another story. IQ using this combination can be amazing but is very dependent on the best of light conditions. If you get perfect light you will have utterly fabulous results. It's great at f/5.6 but amazing at f/7.1 - f/10. When the light goes down a bit then on with the x 1.4 TC. Yup, it's great but only when the conditions are great. I would be far more interested in a x1.7 Mk III !
