I recently bought a new Df….it had over 240 shutter clicks. I called the retailer, and they shipped me out a replacement. This body had over 250 shutter clicks, and the custom functions were set, the AF settings were adjusted. There was no doubt the camera had been bought, and returned.

But in the first case, the camera..looks like all setting were as they left the factory…except for the shutter clicks. So how many is normal…at least for Nikon?

I've never bought a Nikon camera that didn't say 1 in the EXIF data when I took my first photo. I can't say what is "normal".

I had bought a D800, and liked it, great camera, not the camera for me. I took about 7 exposures..and the counter read about 8.

So I returned the D800 and ordered a Df, and it showed 247 in the exif data. I contacted the retailer, they shipped me a replacement, and it showed over 250 clicks…not to mention custom functions had been set up. Someone had clearly set up the camera, then returned it.

I"m not worried about a few clicks on a camera, as long as I have full return privileges and full new warranty. But I was curious to what was normal or average.

Thanks

This is the downside of the US, I suppose, where you all get to return stuff just because you changed your mind!

Can't do that here in NZ so we don't get sent 'pre-used' new items. You buy it, it's yours, and the only reason to return it is OOBF or later failure, in which case they will replace it but I have yet to come across those returned items being sold as new. Yes, as reconditioned but not as new.

Well, the retailer does offer a 30 day return policy, but new cameras are supposed to be new..unused, or sold as open box/returned items as a discount.

There are some places..who will not accept returns..except in case of defect, an then it's for exchange. That is..unless you want to pay a high restock fee. The upside is..when you buy from those places, you are assured of getting a brand new, factory fresh product. And the items that are returned are sold as open box/returns..at a discount.

I have no issue with that kind of policy.

But even so..a camera labeled as "new"…should be…"new"..not used, sloppily repacked, with excess of 250 clicks on the shutter…at least not IMO.

All 3 of my Nikons bought from local dealer, started with 1 shutter actuation on first image. They also required setting time zone and such first time they were turned on.

Everyone who has purchased a DF received cameras with over 200 actuations. They were apparently tested after production which is a good thing. You should have kept the first one. There are a few threads on this.

Hi, I bought a D7000 2 1/2 years ago from Adorama and it had almost 2500 shutter actuations. I called Nikon and asked if it was normal for there to be shutter actuations on a brand new camera. The lady told me it was quite possible as they randomly checked cameras at the factory. She asked how many it had and when I told her she said 100 to 200 were normal and that I should contact the retailer.

I called Adorama and after checking a lady told me it had been used as a demo and that if I didn't want it they would take it back. I was emailed a printable shipping label, took it to UPS or FedEx, I don't remember which, and sent it back. The new one they sent me had no actuations on it.

Then don't buy from Amazon, Best Buy, B&H, or Adorama. I'm sure there are many others, but I don't know them.

Amazon..did offer me a discount (open box pricing) so they worked with me on this. But I'm not likely to buy a camera from them again. Next time I'll go with B&H or Adorama. But I give them credit for working with me on this issue. Amazon's customer service is great.

I expect a new camera to have zero ,I know the retailers have to do something with the cameras that are returned to them so they send it off to the next buyer hoping they don't check the shutter count.I guess a lot of DF's were returned because there has been quite a few threads started about it.

Then you have the DF cheerleaders saying that Nikon extensively tested them before shipping them out.Because it's a parts bin camera .A camera with any shutter actuation's is either a store demo or someones return.

End of story....

I have had four Nikon digital cameras--D800, D300, D80, D50.

Every one started out with "1" as the first shot

Not me. EXIF for my first image said 1 actuation.

This has been discussed multiple times. The Df has several hundred clicks from the factory!

STOP.

I like to think that they are being better tested after Nikon's recent QC problems.

If that's true then Nikon must have reset my Df shutter count to 0 after testing.

I just received my D4s yesterday. I took 4 pictures then checked the shutter count. The fist picture was 0 and then 1 . . . . . .

This is what many mentioned in this forum. I never did check mine but everything was packaged and sealed so I can only assume that it was set to zero actuations. The camera needed to be programmed for everything including date time etc.

You then have the D600 etc cheerleaders not content with appreciating their cameras without trashing with condescending comments the DF owners. I would have thought that all this cheerleading with condescending comments for your choice in cameras would have tired you out by now. Such insecurity!
