I looking to replace my 30D, any suggestion on the 6D, 7D or 70D? I mostly do outdoor and travel photography and already have an array of lenses.

Thanks,

Ray

If you have any EF-S lenses you won't want to go with the 6D unless you're also prepared to replace them with equivalent lenses for FF. IQ will take a significant jump with any of these cameras, but most noticably with the 6D. If you don't need a high frame rate or built-in flash then the 6D may be the camera for you.

If you do need a faster frame rate and want to stay with the APS-C sensor size, either the 70D or 7D would work. The 7D has a slightly faster frame rate and larger buffer, as well as slightly more rugged build. It's also a bit heavier due to the magnesium alloy chassis. The 70D has the flip-out LCD, and benefits from a slightly newer sensor. I have both; I just upgraded my backup camera, a 50D, to the 70D and took it out for the first time over the weekend. I'm impressed with the images I've reviewed so far. I think if I'm shooting birds in flight or go to the local race track I'm more likely to take the 7D for the speed, but the 70D was great on a hike around Bushkill Falls - and I made use of the LCD for low-angle shots. I don't like the SD cards, much too small to handle but it seems only the top-end DSLRs are staying with CF. The remote socket is also different, and the grip is a completely new design.

For travel photography, the 6D would absolutely be my first choice among the bodies you mentioned. Not only is it a huge step up in EVERY respect from the 30D, but it's simply wonderful for travel, offering super high image quality, reasonable weight and size, fantastic low-light capability, GPS tracking, and more.

Obviously, any camera must be paired with the right lenses. For travel, I like to keep things minimal. If you already have EF-S lenses, you'll be starting over with the 6D, but the 24-105 L can often be bought with the 6D at an amazing discount, and makes a fabulous travel lens, offering genuine wide angle and short telephoto, a reasonably fast constant f4 max aperture, image stabilization, continuous manual focus override, and even weather sealing.

Best of luck

Good advice, I agree.

The advice thus far is FANTASTIC, but relatively generic. It's no fault of those commenting as they're working off of limited info. We can best help you if you let us know what lenses you currently have, which do you use the most, and are any of them deficient in any way (would be nice to know the same of the camera).

Currently I have Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS II USM, EF 100mm f/2.8 IS USM Marco Lens, EF-S 17-85mm USM Zoom and I was looking at Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens.

Thanks

Based on that, you could really go FF if you wanted to. You only have 1 EF-S lens and it would probably pair well with the camera when sold on CL/Ebay/etc.

If you went FF, the 6D would be an EXCELLENT choice. Picking up an all-purpose zoom to replace your 17-85 would be easy: the EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM. You could also grab a wide angle that's roughly equivalent to the EF-S 10-22 in the 17-40 f/4L USM (they're close in price). I say roughly equivalent because the EF-S 10-22 on crop is about 3° wider than the EF 17-40 on FF - it's not much of a difference, but it's a difference.

At that point, you've replicated your current gear, added a wanted lens (WA), and SUBSTANTIALLY upgraded the image quality of your existing lenses (the 70-200 and 100mm macro will have new life on the 6D). UNLESS you find that you frequently need to go out beyond 150-ish mm on your 70-200. Also unless you like that roughly 160mm equivalent focal length that you're getting out of your macro lens on your 30D. Then you might find that you need a longer telephoto and macro lens. Or your could pick up an SL1 for around $300-400 for those times you need more reach.

Personally, I'd search for used/refurb gear (if it's refurbed from Canon it has a 1 year warranty that's identical to the new warranty so factor that into the cost vs used) as there are LOTS of 6D's and 24-105's out there and in my VERY LIMITED experience perusing used sites a LOT of people buy wide angle lenses like the 17-40 and then rarely use them.

Personally (again), for a travel kit, I'd go FF. You often need wide more than you need tele and the low light performance of the 6D (both in ISO and AF) is better than either the 7D or 70D. I'd really only consider the 7D or 70D if cost and/or reach is holding your back from the 6D.

Because I already had a couple of L series lenses (17-40 & 70-200) my upgrade for my 30D was the 6D.
My 30D still produces great images but I found I was occasionally doing some heavy cropping and I wanted something that gave me more options to crop without running out of resolution.

However, I didn't have a lens that covered the "standard" focal length in FF, so I bought the 6D with the 24-105 F4L lens kit.
Having read some comments (mainly on these forums) I was a little concerned about the IQ of this lens but these concerns have proved unfounded. Included as part of the kit, this lens is a real bargain and I'm delighted with it. Sure there is some distortion and CA at the very widest settings, but these are easily fixed in software.
I used the 17-40 as my day to day lens on the 30D (I also have the 10-22 EF-S) but it has now become my ultra-wide on the 6D.
I mostly shoot landscape and architecture and I find that between them the 24-105 plus 17-40 handle 90% of my subjects.

Don't believe those that say it's a big step up from the 30D to the 6D.
If you are competent with your 30D you'll find no problems adjusting to the 6D.

+2 for the 6D.

70D if you do birds.
