On the Online Darkroom Website there is a link to a free book on night photography:

You will find it here.

It is in PDF and I have loaded it on to my tablet and have read it. I think it is really quite a good book with tips on how to both for film photography and digital photography.
It also has some nice example photographs. (Sorry no examples here, as I do not own the copyright of any of the images)

go and check it out.

HMMM!. I wonder if the website has the rights needed to give the book away. I have four books in print and they show up all the time on websites that are giving away free PDF copies without my permission.

Here's a quote from the first page of the book:

I was on the board of directors of the Copyright Clearance Center for 3 years. I served on that Board with a representative from Elsevier (the Book's publisher). I must say that I would really be shocked if Elsevier gave up the rights and was allowing the Book to be given away. When I get a moment, I will look into it.

At the website that led to the free book it said:

There are warnings in the file that none of it should be published anywhere without permission so I'll leave it to you to make your own way there and check it out for yourself rather than posting some photographs or text from it. I think you'll find it worthwhile.

In other words, they have not idea whether the "Free" book is there legally or not.

I would guess that this isn't so much a free book as a pirated one. I got the purchased, printed version as a gift from my wife a few years back and can say that it was worth the price she paid, which was not free. If it truly is free it's a steal. If not it's just stolen.

I downloaded the e-book, and it looks terrific. If it turns out it's not an authorized freebie, I'd happily pay the author. The book certainly looks to be worth any cost.

Thanks for the heads up, Andreas.

I just posted the message above a few minutes ago. Then I wen back to the website that offers the free downloads. Being a foreign language website it takes some time to fins what you are looking for. I did fine the Free Books webpage, and now I know it is distributing illegal copies. I know that because Licensing Photography, a book I co-authored with Vic Perlman, ASMP's General Counsel, is there for a free download. I can guarantee that neither Vic nor I gave permission to give it away. I can also guarantee that my publisher, Allworth Press, did not give permission either. The website is an infringement factory.

Do the free give aways have an impact on authors? Indeed they do. I was asked to write a new book last year. I decided not to do it. Why? Because the six months after the book is published it is infringed on multiple sites like the one mentioned in this thread. That means that royalties decline rapidly, and that makes the many hundreds of hours it takes to write a book worth much less than it once was.

Now I have to get that site to take my book down and that is going to be near impossible because it is foreign.

A legitimate copy can be purchased here.

Do what I did when I foubnd a website wasb puiblishing pirated copies of my book. I searched for JK Rowling's books on the same site, found her publisher and notified them. lol doubtless they found a load of other pirated books by the same publisher. the site soon vanished.

Two things :

Make sure you go after the parent website ( fot.br ). I'm not sure why you think Brazilian's are less interested in enforcing copyright than anyone else so at least try.

Note that the link to the file listed in this thread was on wordpress.com so that's another place to attack from, as you can seek to have the documents taken down and the user banned.

I had a look at this and wouldnt pay for a book where the author recommends tresspass. i find this to be an utterly shameful book and would not now ever purchase anything by the author.

Just read the book and stop being a party pooper.

I found a copy of the book in my library. What a load of garbage! If anybody wants to look, I posted a review of it on my blog.

Yes folks, this is a pirated version of the book. There is no legal free distribution of the text. The revised second edition will be published by Focal Press in March of 2015.

Thank you Richard. Appreciate the support, and yes, of course it is a pirated version.

Hi-

What you have is indeed a pirated version. If you would indeed like to compensate me, please contact me thru my website, www.thenightskye.com, or find me on Facebook.

Thanks, Lance Keimig

You wouldn't say that if you had spent a year of your life writing it only to have it appear as an illegal download on a million websites.
