Any recommendations for an RX10 + iPad Messenger Bag?

I am looking for a messenger / courier style bag which will accommodate a DSC-RX10, iPad and the usual assorted stuff for use as an every day bag and flight carry-on.

I do like the vertical form factor and compactness of the Tamrac Zuma 32. However it looks like the camera pouch is designed for a removal lens camera with the divider being stitched in place.

I have also been considering the Lowepro Event Messenger 150. This bag has a horizontal orientation and looks like it would have plenty of room for the camera and other stuff. I do like the external end pockets for carry a water bottle, however I wish the black one didn't have a big red stripe on it.

Is there anything else you would recommend I take a look at?

I use a Timbuk2 Catapult when I'm bicycling with my tablet and RX10. It comes in two sizes, depending on how much extra stuff you want to carry. Both sizes have a padded slot for the tablet, a big compartment for your camera etc, and a few small pockets for misc items. These bags are much lighter weight and slimmer than Timbuk2's regular messenger bags, which is great for traveling light.

This is not a camera-specific bag, but all-in-one cameras like the RX10 really don't need camera-specific bags. If you're worried about bumps etc, you can slip a padded holster case into the messenger bag.

Thanks for the suggestion. However this looks to be more of a back sling type bag that a messenger. I prefer a more wear in the side style. I can see how this would be a good bike bag tough.

Thanks, some really great suggestions. I particularly like the Tenba DNA 11 which I think is an update to the mini. It is probably a bit bigger than I really need but it has some great features and the kind of style I like. They have just release a smaller DNA 8, but unfortunately this is too small for an iPad.

I use it when I'm walking around town, too, with the strap looser than when I'm biking. This bag is meant to be worn over your back instead of at your hip, but I think that's true of all real messenger bags.

I have the Lowepro Event Messenger 150. I am very pleased with it. The size is perfect for the RX10 with a few extra goodies (some filters, extra batteries, cleaning kit, small flashlight, etc). It holds my tablet (Nexus 10 with case) and a bottle of water on the side. The neck strap is comfortable and I like the dual flap closing mechanism. I got the olive colored bag just so the bag did not look like all of my other camera bags.

I tried to Event Messenger 100, but it was a little too small.

Thanks, it is good to hear that this bag is a good match for the RX10, it is definitely on my short list. I generally prefer a black bag but I would agree that olive is a smart option with much more subtle branding.

You don't mention whether you have an iPad mini or a full size, but i bought this bag a few weeks ago.

The first trip was to Hot Springs, Ar. It was a great bag for the trip. Held my RX100, WX9, water proof case assorted charges. It has an great internal padded pouch that was able to hold 2 mini's snuggly.

Second trip this past weekend was to San Fransisco. The bag was awesome as a carry on. It held the camera's, the chargers, 2 iPhones , a fleece blanket and some snacks. It is very well made and was on my back the entire trip. Early sunday morning (10am) we stopped at an awesome brewery / pub in the Haight / Ashbury area, and bought an empty growler. Though it did not reside in the bag, it did hang from it the rest of the day.

It's an iPad Air, so almost full size. I am really looking for something that sits on the hip rather than the back. I like the easy access that this style offers, allowing you to dip in whilst on the move.

Absolutely love my Think Tank Retrospective 7. I repurposed it from carrying my DSLR kit to carrying my RX10, RX100, HVL-F43M & F20M flashes, reflectors, filters MS Surface Pro 2 computer and all manner of accessories and cables for the computer and cameras. It's become my tech bag. Usually I'll just grab the camera of choice, a polarizer and a LensPen and head out for the day, but when travelling, this bag carries it all. I much prefer the fabric and look of the Retrospective series to most traditional bags and the Think Tank design is hard to beat. Of course that's just my preference.

Thanks for your suggestion. Do you use the back pocket for your tablet? I was concerned that this was a little exposed and wouldn't offer much protection.

Also, from what I have read, the external end pockets are not big enough for a water bottle which is a bit of a shame.

Many thanks for the suggestions, they led to a lot of review reading/watching which then directed me at yet more alternatives. My (not very) short list now includes 13 bags. I'll list them here in case it is a useful resource for anyone else looking for a similar bag.

Of all of these, the Tenba DNA 11 is the one that ticks almost all my boxes; Dedicate iPad slot, External water bottle pocket, Zipped external pockets, Trolley piggyback strap, Quick direct access zip, Fully removable camera insert, Rain cover, Rugged waterproof bottom.

The only thing it is missing are silencers for the velcro. However hopefully this will not be an issue given that it has the quick access zip.

The only problem I have now is that it doesn't seem to be available in the UK yet. :-(

Yes I use the back pocket. It's padded. With the abuse I put my laptops/iPads through and they survive, I'm not at all worried about it when it's in this pocket.

The end pockets are stupid. They're so tight it's hard to get anything much in there and if you do, it's tough to get back out if it's small and all the way in. Certainly not able to hold a water bottle. You've identified my only complaint. Even if they could have made one end water bottle compatible. Oh well.

My Tenba DNA11 arrived today (just became available in the UK), it is a truly superb bag, excellent quality inside and out. Highly recommended.

I have looked at many of the bags mentioned in this thread, many good options. I am now using the Thinktank Retrospect 7, works good with my Surface Pro 2. I am about to order a Tamrac Apache 6. My thinktank bag would be perfect if I could fit vanilla file folders, but it can't and the Tamrac can. My bag will become my man purse!

I am an accountant as well as a photographer. The Surface Pro 2 can handle Quickbooks as well as the typical web surfing. It can handle Photoshop as well. I can pack my RX10, a weekly planner, a small spiral notebook, an external hard drive, some headphones music player, and more. Haven't figured out how to get the kitchen sink in it yet.

It is sooooo nice to be able to travel much lighter than I had been and still have gear that will do quality work.

the ability to hold file folders. I am thinking of getting a Tamrac Apache 6 but I am thinking I can rig the Retrospect 7 to hold a couple of file folders.

I really like the Surface Pro 2, it does just about everything my laptop can do but takes less space. I have gone from carrying nearly 40 lbs of gear to a bag, camera, and tablet/computer that does not sacrifice a whole lot of quality to what I had.

That's why I have these little Lego items that can be attached to my case strap or zip to prove I have everything with me. :-D
