Howdy,

I've been shooting flowers and other low lying things for years, and recently discovered an accessory that I can't believe it took me so long to find. Yes, as the title says, knee pads.

It may seem like a boring subject, but I can't believe how much more enjoyable my shooting is now that I've started using these:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005LEXF/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The pair weighs 4.5 oz. There is no hard plastic, just a flexible, but firm outer shell, with a thick, softer, but still firm inner layer, and a soft layer of fabric to go next to the skin. I've only had them a week, but the've already gotten a good workout and seem quite durable.

They actually fit UNDER my pants legs, and are incredibly comfortable to wear, so much so that I can put them on before going out, and then walk around and shoot for hours and hours, and never even think about them until I kneel down to shoot something.

Anyway, just a thought for all you flower and macro shooters....... and heck, they're probably good for gardening too :-)

American football photographers often use knee pads, too. Many pro football venues require the photographer to kneel at the sidelines, which can really wreck your knees after four quarters! These look really good.

This is actually the best thing I've come across so far. It's just easier and doesn't make you look like your racing motorcycles or something.

Bdan75,

I may have to try those. I assume that they are one size fits all? I have some nice silicone knee pads from the hardware store, but they don't stay on my knees well.
Bearmann,

Actually it's a pad that you just set on the ground and kneel on. But it's bigger and thicker than it looks. If you're going to be in the same spot for a while it works great.

Hmmm...... I like that it doesn't make you look like you're racing motorcycles (although honestly, I'm WAY more interested in comfort than how I look), but it doesn't look wearable, more like you have to carry it with you and then place it down when you're ready to shoot, and move it around if you change positions.

That might be fine for some folks, but I'm a fast shooter and I move and change positions quickly, often trying to catch the light before it shifts or fades, so for me, the wearable knee pads offer a more suitable solution.

By the way, my original pads still look virtually brand new and work great, with the only downside being that my knees tend to sweat a bit more while wearing them. But that's a small price to pay for the extreme comfort they give me when shooting down low.

Derek,

It's definitely for shooting when you're stationary, or at least semi-stationary. The type of stuff I shoot (sports marketing) requires me to stay in the same spot, sometimes uncomfortably, while the subject does the same thing over and over until I get the shot we had planned.

Oh, bummer! I move around a lot and need something that moves with me.

Glad I'm not the only one that has discovered this! I picked up a pair a couple years ago in a local Home Depot, but for a somewhat different situation. I shoot local UKC dog shows a couple times a year and frequently kneel down so I can get eye-level shots. So much easier on the knees :-)

Mine are from Home Depot, go over the pant leg (I want to save my pants), are thick enough that I can kneel on rock or concrete and not care.

An alternate I can use hiking is the trimmed off garden kneeling pad I use as a frame in a daypack - can whip it out and sit on it too, makes a cold rock more tolerable.

If you need something that moves with you, then check out the knee pads mentioned in my first post, or look at the many other wearable knee pads that are on the market to find the ones that will work for YOU.

It's definitely worth the effort.
