Error "TURN OFF THE CAMERA AND TURN ON AGAIN" on X-T1

I have an obviously new X-T1 with a 27mm 2.8 that I bought the same day. I noticed the following: If I aim to a clear sky for example, where the camera is unable to focus (shows the red icon), and I still push the shutter... in a good number of cases the camera seems to hang, the lens keeps looking for focus and then after some time it shows the "TURN OFF THE CAMERA AND TURN ON AGAIN" error.

Is anybody else experiencing this? Somehow it doesn't seem to be a mechanical problem, but more to do with the camera's software... (I am guessing)..

Also, minor, but enough to annoy me, I lost the pc sync socket cap. I wasn't playing with it. It just fell off. I emailed Fuji to see how to get a replacement. Otherwise I will try ebay...

Thanks!

Andres

Usually this message comes when the contacts of the lens are not clean

Use an optical micro fiber cloth and clean the contacts then retry

Thank you Baobob and Trevor.

I don't have a filter. I already tried cleaning the lens contacts :(

It doesn't happen all the time. It will only happen if the camera was unable to auto focus and I insist in taking the picture. Then, sometimes I get the picture after a second, and other times the screen freezes for maybe 5 seconds and then shows the error.

To give more background: The camera doesn't fail to auto focus under regular conditions. It's only for when it is expected that it wont be able to focus. e.g. get the camera close to the flat screen TV (tv is off) where it can't find a focus point, or aim it up to a clear sky.

So I am not complaining the lens doesn't auto focus. Under those conditions is it expected. My complain is that this forces me to restart the camera and waste time.

If you had the issue, was it also happening when the camera was able to focus, or only under a scenario similar to mine?

I was doing some studio work with my Fuji X-T1 with Fuji 35mm f1.4 this week and photo studio was very dimly lit and having a hard time finding focus. At the end of the 2 hour shoot I began experiencing the same issues as you...so frustrating. I did some quick googling and someone mentioned that the error occurs when the focusing motor is failing; I hope that not the case. I'll let you know if I figure it out.

I have had similar issues using a gripped Xt1 when the battery in the grip is running low, its makes the camera act in a weird way, once you have installed a fresh battery the issue goes away. Think this has been mentioned before on various forums.

Andres, I have the same issue with the X-T1 and 27mm.

I know what you mean, it's very annoying and time consuming.

It seems to occur when it's low-ish light or very contrasty light, or when there's not a lot in the scene (clear sky). Generally when it might struggle to focus.

Did you find a solution? Or open a support ticket with Fuji?

I suppose I'm trying to determine:

Is it a fault with all X-T1 and 27mm combinations, if so, I'll wait for updates to fix it. If not, I'll begin the annoying process of getting it replaced under warranty.

Another thing that I've noticed, which makes me think that it could be an issue with conflicting firmwares somewhere (rather than a focus motor), is that I can't seem to make it happen when in "manual" focus mode (front of camera switch), and using the AF-L button to auto focus.

Do other experiencing this problem find the same thing?

Hi,

I don't recall that one, but for the "turn off the camera error", I sent the body and lens to Fuji service and they ended up replacing the lens.

Hope this helps,

Andres

I'm experiencing something similar with the XF 18mm F2. I've tried it with different camera models and the behavior is the same.

It only happens in manual focus mode on the following situation:
- I rotate the focusing ring to focus as close as possible to the camera
- The lens stops doing the focusing noise
- I rotate the ring in the opposite direction but nothing happens
- The error message appears in the camera screen: TURN OFF THE CAMERA AND TURN ON AGAIN

It seems that after trying to focus beyond the closest that it's possible, the lens stops moving and the error appears in the screen.

This also happens when using the back focus button in manual focus mode. In this case, when in manual focus mode, I use the back focus button to focus on a point closer than what the lens can focus. When that happens, the lens stops focusing and the error message appears in the camera screen.

However, when I use the auto focus mode, the problem never happens. It doesn't matter how close I try to focus, the lens never gets "stucked" and the error message never shows up in the screen.

I find this problem a bit weird. It doesn't seem to be a motor issue since the problem never happens in auto focusing mode. The focus ring seems to be working fine. And, the weirdest thing: the problem still happens when auto-focusing with back button in manual focus mode, but not when the camera is in auto-focus mode.
