Just recievedmy new E10 from officemax yesterday. I wont be able to really use the camera for about another month, but i did a little testing, and I have to say that I am very impressed.

The camera feels like the real deal in my hand, the colors are absolutely amazing, especially the skin tones. The auto focus is very fast and precise. Very fast in my book, that is. The last time I used a film slr was maybe 6 years or so ago, it was a crappy old russian Zenit, an did not have auto focus, so the only thing I can really compare it to is my Canon s40, which is dreadfully slow and difficult to focus. The s40 is a great little camera, though, and I have learned to play around its limitations to get some pretty good, IMHO, shots. here's a few samples for those interested.

I am really** looking forward to getting everything I can out of the Olympus. Fortunately, I will have quite a few opportunities do some shooting in late Decemver, when I go to celebrate New Years and do some skiing in Vermont. I am also interested in exploring the prisbilities of selling some of my shots to try to get my hobby to pay for itself.

This forum has been extremely helpful so far, and I'm looking forward to learning more as I go along.

On a side note, I was not originally going to get the E10. In fact, I made a conscious descision to hold off on getting a digital camera for another year or so, and then get something to the matter of a Canon D60 or a Fuji S2 when their prices are pushed down by the next latest and greatest. And then, one day, I was in CompUsa to pick up a DVD player, and noticed that they have a display model availiable to play around with. Let me tell you, it was love from the first sight. I siply could not be dragged away from the camera even though my girlfriend, who immediately smelled trouble, made every attempt to do that. And now, she wound up giving it to me for my birthday which, alas, is not for a month. And even though the camera is sitting there on my desk, I can not use it, save a few test shots, until the time comes. This is TORTURE

Welcome to the forum!
Unfortunately, I dont think so :(

She was quite stern about that, especially since I was about two weeks late on her last birthday present :) We were in the middle of driving from the east coast to the west with all our belongings, and I did take her out to a very nice restoraunt and then give her a very good present, but I think she got upset anyways... So looks like I will just have to deal.

Thanks.

This forum has been very helpful so far. I did a lot of homework on this camera before requesting it. I still need to take some test shots in daylight to make sure it focuses correctly, but from the flash shots and shots with long exposures, I think there is no problem here. Now I just need to get batteries and wait it out :)

Alex,

Since you can't take the camera out to run free - do yourself a huge favor - get the manual out and go through it page by page and make every setting (check the results) and play with all the knobs and buttons. This is not a pick it up and shoot camera if you want to really use all its capabilities and now is the time to explore them before you get out there and say now what the heck was that I was supposed to do under these conditions.

Have fun (even learning the controls is fun) and welcome.

Ed Oliver

If you haven't already done so, it's well worth downloading the full manual in pdf format - you can get it from the Belgium Digital site: http://www.belgiumdigital.com/

Thanks for a good piece of advise - that was the first thing I did :)

I've also immediately set the iso to 80, sharpness and contrast to low (I enjoy playing with photoshop) and file settings to the lowest-compressed JPEG.

So far, I see not reason to turn off IR focusing - it seems to preform well, even though it does not seem to auto-focus on a very small subject (a thin little twig) no matter how careful I am about centering it - 'guess I'll have to use manual focus for that, which was something I was planing to use a lot anyways.

The focus screen looks like it will take a little getting used to - it seems it's a bit harder to see if the subject is completely in focus than the old crappy SLR I had before. This does look like something I will be able to deal with after I get some experience. The electric focus ring will take a little getting used to as well, but this is also, hopefully, not a big deal.

Congratulations on the new camera. I agree, that would be torture having to wait to use it while it just sits there:) The good thing is that you got it, though. Hopefully the wait will go by quickly.

Your story sounds very much like mine, except...... being married for a very long time I have conditioned the girl to 'accelerated' scheduling. Since the kid is gone, we pretty much wrap up Xmas prior to Thanksgiving. That way I am completely proficient on all my new toys in time for XMAS!

It's an absolutely wonderful logic and she buys into it with a bit of effort on my part, which there is plenty of when the reward is a new toy! You see, you got to work on their mind! If I had a cam in the box waiting for the right day and I was drueling down the front of my shirt, I'd just have to get down to busines and fire up the Whine Generator (the male equivilent of a female in tears). Grind em down till they give in is my strategy. Or you can do what I did...... buy an e-20, put the e-10 back in the box and say, "look what I got you dear"..... She loves me now!

I am really** looking forward to getting everything I can out of
the Olympus. Fortunately, I will have quite a few opportunities do
some shooting in late Decemver, when I go to celebrate New Years
and do some skiing in Vermont. I am also interested in exploring
the prisbilities of selling some of my shots to try to get my hobby
to pay for itself.

This forum has been extremely helpful so far, and I'm looking
forward to learning more as I go along.

On a side note, I was not originally going to get the E10. In fact,
I made a conscious descision to hold off on getting a digital
camera for another year or so, and then get something to the matter
of a Canon D60 or a Fuji S2 when their prices are pushed down by
the next latest and greatest. And then, one day, I was in CompUsa
to pick up a DVD player, and noticed that they have a display model
availiable to play around with. Let me tell you, it was love from
the first sight. I siply could not be dragged away from the camera
even though my girlfriend, who immediately smelled trouble, made
every attempt to do that. And now, she wound up giving it to me for
my birthday which, alas, is not for a month. And even though the
camera is sitting there on my desk, I can not use it, save a few
test shots, until the time comes. This is TORTURE

My girlfriend graciously allowed me to play around with the camera a little to verify that it works properly.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to use it in the daytime, so all the test shots I got a chance to take were taken in my house with the built in flash.

The good news is that the camera does not seem to have any of the known defects. Both the manual and the auto focus is sharp, and while I did get a few blurry shots, it seems that they were my own fault.

The bad news is that I have to pack it back up and won't get to use it till 12/22...

You can see all of the pictures I took with it here
