Hi,

i am a begginer photographer and i just bought a nikon 50mm f1.8D as a prime lens to practice with.can someone please guide on how to use it with this camera to take macro and portrait pictures and most importantly can someone please tell me how to use the manual aperture ring on the lens along with the aperture settings on the D5200?should i set the aperture from the lens or should i set it from the camera?

thank you.

It's not a macro lens, might be a closeup lens for portraits. But more an alround streetlens. If you want it to do macro, you'll need to mount it with a convertor, the other way around. Front element attached to the body.

I'm not sure that the D5n00 cameras can use the aperture ring. The best way is to set the lens to the smallest aperture (f/22), and there is a lock to keep it there. Then change aperture the same way you would with a 'G' type lens. You will have to manually focus the lens on your camera.

For macro use you will need extension tubes, or a reversing adapter, although the 50 f/1.8 does focus quite closely.

You might check the menu settings for controls to see if there is a setting to use aperture ring.

I use the off-d 50 1.2 on my d3100. The green dot certainly helps in focusing. After a bit oefene succeed fairly well. Very good lens for portraits. For macro, you can buy a reversing ring so the lens is placed upside down on the body. Focusing on f 1.8 and then take pictures at f16. Takes some practice but works pretty good and not expensive if you only do sporadically macro.

Sorry, here's a better translation

i know that i will have to reverse it for macro and that it does not focus automatically.i don't use auto focus.but i just want to know how to use this lens in aperture priority mode.and how to use the aperture ring?for example if i set the aperture to f22 will the camera change it back to f5 or 6 while taking a picture?

You don't use the aperture ring. Yes, you set it to f/22 and then slide the lock in place to keep it there. The camera then electronically sets the aperture to what you selected through the camera controls (A or M mode) or to what the camera decided it likes (P, S, AUTO or scene mode), just like it does with G lenses that lack the aperture ring.

The D5200 has the electronic range finder, right? If you enable that you get to see additional feedback on your focus in the viewfinder.

Hi,

You have to lock the aperture ring to f/22 and use the wheel to change the aperture. On D7100 there is an option to use the manual aperture ring. You have to check the manual for D5200.

For macro you can use close up filters, reversing the lens or extension tubes. All can give you some macro ability.

I have this lens and still out resolves D7100 sensor at f/4.5

If you use the lens to take normal pictures you set the aperture ring to f22 and secure.

If you use the lens for macro (reversed on the body) use the widest aperture (f 1.8) so that the viewfinder is ot too dark. If you take the picture you put the aperture to f16 to get sharpness.

To use for macro, use M and 1/60.

For ordinary photos use the A, so you have control over the aperture.

thanks a lot.this helped.even though i haven't used this camera that much and don't know a lot.but i can clearly tell the difference from the 18-55 kit lens.infact i am barely gonna use the kit lens from now on.

here is a sample image.

settings:

aperture: F2

exp time:1/15

This is a macro with the 50mn f/1.8 D with a +10d closeup filter lens.

Perhaps the best option is to use cheaper/ with out conections extension tubes and having an aperture ring is an advantage there.

You are stuck at manual focus with this lens anyway
