What a great camera! What a great great camera!! Good looking, fast, accurate, fun, compact, lightweight and did i say good looking?
This camera is not just a camera. It's a fashion. It's a style. It's a friend, a tool, a moneymaker and just a fun, big men's(or woman's) toy to have.
Quick and responsive. The camera is snappy and make's you happy. Startup time, menu navigation, browsing, deleting pictures etc...it's all good. The focusing system is adequate. Fuji has come along way (so i heard) and i believe their on the right track.
Good contrast + good light = great focus speed and accuracy.
Low contrast and/or low light = Decent to Okay to Not good enough Focus speed. Though if it does focus, 99% of the time i found it to be very accurate.
Mind you i take the most demanding of situations into consideration here. In everyday use i would say that the system is good and on the right track. What it needs is more sensitivity for both subject seperation and low light.
Beautiful image quality. Let's be honest here. Fuji is doing magic with the x-trans sensors and we as photographer plug the fruits from it. I have been used to a D800 for a year now and surprisingly i don't really miss any of the megapixels, dynamic range or DOF from the moment i layed my hands on the XE-2. I will use whatever that invites me the most and if it delivers enough then i don't have any reason not to use it or look back. In the end you'll take your best shots with what you use the most.
But honeslty the camera delivers in all categories; From Dynamic range, to resolution, colors, low-light/noise performance. It's all good and it will satisfy even the most demanding photographers.
Other things i like about the camera are;
Ergonomics. Comfy and compact, solid feel. Great controls. Love the controls and i really miss this type of manual control if i switch to another system again. It's kinda intuitive but also kinda fun. It's those two factors combined that make it so great to use.
Focus peaking. Love it. Works very well. Helps alot when the auto focus fails. Actually used it alot in portrait shoots lately when light was to low for the XE-2.
You may check out some of the portraits here.
The EVF is okay. I guess they already worked on that anyway huh. It works good enough though. I just have this funny feeling sometimes that the LCD beats the EVF in a pure picture quality point of view. Sometimes i wouldnt bother with the EVF altough other times i really start to get the hang of it again and use it alot as well or more. Both are fun to compose with.
oops Nik software tempted me again
Anyway i don't have more to say. Just wanted to share my positive introduction with Fuji. I'm really happy and excited to continue photographing with this brand. They really got something right. I've never felt so close with my camera. That's the best way how i can describe it. All photographs within this review where taken on the same morning yesterday. I never had so many pictures that i liked in such a short period of time. I just keep snapping and discovering. It's like going on a big world trip with a great sailship. Fun fun fun and inspiring.
