i see that only some cams offer external flash sync, and apparently they only work with proprietary external systems. it sounds like, for example, the nikon cp 995 will support external flash but only nikon speedlights - is that correct? and that the canon c4000 needs a special bracket or something that costs an extra $100. which 3-4mp cams will support the external flash setup i already have (pair of vivitar strobes in umbrellas)? vielen dank.

The Fuji 602 is VERY adaptable as it will take virtually ANY gun and in fact is not that fussy about trigger voltages either. Of course the lower the better but I have read of some using guns with 250v or more and Fuji don't give any sort of fixed limit.

I don't use flash to a great extent but just a day or two ago finally decided that I needed at least something useful so I bought the little beauty - Metz 32-Z1 with 3 'Auto' settings (flash power) + Manual and with bounce/swivel/tilt/flash-check etc .. works a treat. The 602 will synch at ANY Speed so I just set it at 1/1000 and leave that. Choose whichever Auto power setting is suitable for the occasion and the slider gives a suggested aperture - set that on camera and that's it. Put the settings on camera, put it in 'M' mode and fire away. You get what is almost TTL usage as indicated below. First is a trial shot at above mentioned settings - distance about 4-5 feet at most, straightahead shooting. Second is same settings but in evening (no daylight) in a small domestic room with modest lighting that had virtually no effect on the flash lighting, this was a direct bounce up & down from ceiling. Only a simple trial test but enough to show the potential 'auto' capabilities under many different conditions.

The bounce..

Some of the Olympus cameras (E-10, E-20, C-4000, C-4040, C-730UZ) have a 5 pin TTL terminal that you can connect a FL-CB04 cable which has a standard pc-sync output. B&H and Adorama sell this cable for $40. The C-5050Z, E-10, E-20 have an Olymput TTL hot-shoe that can also drive a standard hot-shoe flash (or a hot-shoe to pc-sync converter). Note, the C-5050Z which was just released, doesn't have the 5 pin TTL terminal, just the hot-shoe.

The new Minolta 7HI has a pc-sync connector on the camera (previous Minoltas had a hot-shoe for their propitary flashes, but I'm not sure if it would drive a standard hot-shoe flash).

Somebody else mentioned the Fuji S602.

I believe the Canon G2/G3 have a hot-shoe.

The Oly E-series also have the standard PC socket for any non dedicated flash unit or studio strobes. I use Sunpak 544 and 555 handle mount strobes with my E-10s and also Calumet Travelight studio strobes. The Oly E-series also have the hot shoe in which I use (at times) a Quantum radio transmitter for remotely located lights.
