I am planning on buying one of these 2...just not sure which. Who uses the panasonic and if you do, do you wish it was the olympus?

I am worried by the horror stories of the olympus breaking apart.

I also plan on buying the Panasonic 35-100 f2.8.

If you want a smaller/lighter lens, and OIS, I would go for the Panasonic.

If you want more range, and better close-focus distance, I would go with the Olympus.

I went with the Oly for my EM1, and it hasn't fallen apart yet. The reports do have me a little worried, but so far it seems like a very nice lens.

If you do a search of this forum, you'll find about a dozen threads comparing these two lenses. In a nutshell, the Olympus has tested a bit sharper toward the edges of the frame than does the Panasonic, but the Panasonic has opitical image stabilisation, which makes it more useful on Panasonic bodies which (with the exception of the GX7) lack in-body stabilisation.

12-35 has never let me down and I am now using it on my E-M1. And I can still get IS on my Lumixes. But it is expensive. No doubt. Build quality is nice and I see no downsides if you choose it. It seems to make a good size fit with just about every micro four thirds I own. Comes with quality lens hood. A toss up I guess. The 35-100 is what I could use, but it is too dear for my uses right now. I wonder what price the impressive looking and tripod base new Oly long fixed zoom will be offered at. Makes for toughish choices. But optically you can't go wrong with either one methinks. A toss up maybe?

The Panny 12-35 f2.8 and 35-100 f2.8 are both gems, you won't be dissapointed, and they make a nice pair covering almost all shooting situations. I haven't used the Oly version - so can't really compare.

Here you go: http://www.mu-43.com/showthread.php?t=56256

Be gentle with that one.

I use this on my E-M5 and it is simply outstanding. Very sharp and very smooth and closer focusing than the Panasonic 12-35.

The 12-40 is unlikely to "fall apart" but it can "break" apart when subjected to force. Lenses are designed to break under stress so as to not bend the lens mount out of shape. Under normal use the lens really should never break apart.

The Panasonic 12-35 is also very good but on an Olympus camera it must be used with a UV 2A filter to avoid purple fringing. (Luckily such filters exist in 58mm as needed for the 12-35.)

Everybody quit worrying about the 12-40 falling apart. Its a stupid urban legend perpetuated by someone who claims he dropped his on a bed of flowers from a height of 2 inched while in a case and it cracked like an egg. Personally I dont believe it was anything but a ploy to get his broken lens fixed under warranty and stir up drama here. Yea I know, there have been many cases of this happening, BS! Sick of hearing this #$^%%&()#4@

Sorry for feeding the trolls but not to worry, I'm sure this post will get axed as soon as I hit post button.

I am, they are all like that, I have seen disturbing pictures of "L's" torn up the same way from misuse/abuse. Lots of trolls in these woods like to stir the pot of drama soup. Go use your lens its wonderful and some are SOOOO jealous! Just take normal good care in it is fine.

Oh and dont feed the trolls like I just did, I should know better but...

We are pretty sure they are all the same one. Tomorrow it will be more breakages than actual lenses produced to this point.

Eric, agree with your feelings about this issue. Total fear caused by an idiot badly handling his gear.

Like I crashed my Subaru into another car and the wheels got all bent, it must surely be Subaru's fault.

If anyone takes the usual care with their gear and does not drop it then all is well.

The last two threads that were stressing this lens "fault" were zapped by the moderators, so I guess this one is headed that way as well.

Regards...... Guy

Olympus probably sold millions of copies worldwide and 5 are hardly anything significant. Just buy the extended warranty for 60 bucks if you worry so much about it. Those guys probably lifted their cameras from the lens or have inexpensive and poorly padded camera bags.
