Hi there,

I'm a photography newbie, but know the minimal basics to use the Nikon D3100.

Recently I noticed that I cannot change the aperture or shutter speed in any mode.

I have tried manual mode with the same problem, and same with Aperture priority and Shutter priority. The wheel turns but the settings do not change.

I have performed all the possible resets of the camera to no avail.

I am certain the wheel is working because I can flip between pictures in view mode.

Can someone please offer some assistance. I would like to avoid returning the camera for repair.

Thank you so much for your help.

First, I would recommend that you carefully read the manual for basic operations, if you haven't already.

What happens when you try to change the settings? Does anything change?

What are the settings that are set in 'Manual' for shutter speed and aperture? Do you see the settings, or does something like 'FEE' appear (indicating an aperture ring isn't set correctly)?

Are you sure the lens is mounted correctly? Did you hear a 'click' when it was put on?

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Your comment about the lens made me take it off and put it back again, and it seems to be sorted!

You are wonderful, because I called Nikon and they told me it needs a service - could be up to 200 dollars.

Happy holidays and thank you again!
