Why is lightroom auto exposure too bright?

It seems to me that 8 of 10 times lightroom auto exposure adjustment is way to bright. But i like how it adjusts the exposure range (highlights, shadows, whites, blacks) plus contrast... So i find my self hitting auto and then pulling back the exposure on 8 of 10 pics. Very rarely does it make it to dark or not need any manual adjustment.

Is there anything that can be done about this and make it correct more often?

I don't think it is possible to say that one is more 'correct' than the other, it is really a matter of taste.

I've discovered from discussions in this thread that Lightroom compresses the highlights quite a lot. Thus the mid tones can be raised quite a lot before clipping of the highlights occurs. In auto, Lightroom does this to distribute the tones to make everything in the image as clear as possible.

Like you, I find the auto setting is often too bright overall. I prefer to use the default setting (no adjustments) and then adjust the sliders to my own taste.
