Over here in America we say Kanon and Nykon.

The original for Canon is kya-non (キャノン). Might as well ask why they mispronounce Pokemon and karaoke, too. While we're at it, why do the Japanese mispronounce McDonald's?

I presume that you are referring to the US and Canadians, rather than Inuit or Patagonians. Everyone living on the super continent of America, North and South, are Americans. Probably the same reason that Paris is not pronounced 'Paree', shear laziness.

I just called NikonUSA. They answer the phone as nye-kahn. When someone tells me their name, I call them what they wish to be called. In the US it would not be considered polite to correct someone in regards to the correct pronunciation of their chosen name. What is the correct pronunciation of Thomas? How can Ivan, Jan, John all be the same name?

If the real question was as stated, I agree with others that the syllables Can- and Nik- do not sound alike in american english.
