I have a D7000 and SB700 Flash unit. What I would like to do is fire remote flash SB700 without firing the camera flash. I tried to this with the menu but was not able to. If on camera flash is NOT raised the remote does not work. May be there is something I don't know...Is there a way to achieve this? Thanks in advance

If you dont want to use flash to trigger off camera flashguns then you can use nikon su-800 wireless trigger to fire the flashguns or you can buy a full wireless transmitter/reciever set.

You can wade through all the post, but customer settings menu e3 flash control for built in flash to commander mode, set group and channel to match your sb700 flash. It will fire but only enough to activate sb700's sensor.

Yes I figured that, however my question was to suppress it completely. After a little investigation I can set the on-board flash to 1/128 power which would be negligible anyway. I initially thought the flash triggers via an RF signal since I see a "channel" setting in command mode. But I guess it triggers via UV light (is this correct?) thus a need for on-board flash to fire no matter what...Am I correct ?

You can also set it to "--" which is slight less than 1/128 regards what get contributed to the exposure

Optical only

If you are using in in that way, yes...vs getting radio triggers. The thread referenced above covers the possibilities better

Hi Alex,

why do the tiny commander flashes bother you?
They would only be visible if the object is very close and shiny.

Let me try to illustrate...

The following picture was taken from a distance of about a meter away. If you look closely at the right eye, you will see a second much smaller light spot more to the center of his eye. That is from the commander-pre-flash.

The second sample is taken around 3 meters away from the main object, but even the grass right in front does NOT show any light from the commander-flash.

However, if you want to get sure then the only thing you need is a SG-3IR from NIKON. It is a piece of plastic that covers the pop-up flash and only lets the IR part through. There is no need for any expensive extra triggers etc.

I hope this info will help you with your decision.

Greets,

Matt

Thank you for the link. I have the same question (SB-700 and D7000 and want to use remote flash without on camera flash) and almost the same problem.
