IMHO (and in the opinion of hundreds of other DPReview members from other forums that I have talked to.)

There is probably more technical knowledge on this forum than any other forum on DPReview.

Sadly, there are also far more arrogant, condescending mean people on this forum than any other on DPReview.

As valuable as their knowledge might be, the forum would be much better off without them.

Fortunately I won't be able to read any of their responses as I have blocked them all... and you should too.

The Canon full frame forum is way nastier than here. Aart from the fact that I only have a few minor camera in Canon, that forum was way too nasty for my tastes.

I am not talking about the a__holes here. Im talking about the photographers,enthusiast,techies all dumped in one forum to help someone out with a problem. If you post a clear and straight to the point question with all necessary information( images,data) You'll receive clear and straight to the point answers back. But if start a thread and leave youself Wide-Open for (some ball-breakin), it wont take long for the response to start pouring in.

To be honiest in Bob's case the early responses weren't that bad at all, maybe a little blunt but really I think his situation deserved that.

The "Ball Breakin" only started when he started with the incredably arrogant put downs himself, anyone who starts to post like that deserves to be run off a forum IMHO, not that anyone who responds like that would learn anything from a forum in the first place of course.

Yet another person that does not want to accept responsibility for his own culpability.

I was one of the first to post in his thread. It was clear to me that Bob needed to calm down, take a breath, and use a systematic approach to determining what his problem was. He received a lot of good advice, but yet without any additional facts declared that:

"... I am also convinced that there is a mechanical error that needs to be corrected."

There was plenty of evidence to the contrary in Bob's own photographs, provided through various comments. But as long as Bob continues the thinking error of believing there is a mechanical error, without first eliminating all other sources of error, then he is as wrong as those who inappropriately post.

I think this forum is far, far better than some other forums here. The Sony DSLR/SLT forum comes to mind as an example, with nasty debate between DSLR people and SLT people.

It might be calmer over there now that most of the DSLR people have gone elsewhere (I'm one of them - I enjoy shooting sports and I don't think Sony has any advantage to offer me there), but it was certainly nasty.

Think the "no true D700 replacement" thing was bad here? Imagine what it was like over there with the "no true a700 replacement" threads...because the a77 was one controversial camera.

The Nikon SLR Lens section, and this one, are largely why I joined the DPR forum. I have seen far worse sections than this one.

I do not pretend to know more than I do, and respectfully listen when advised, even if the advice is a bit harsh. I learned the use of DSLR cameras quite quickly, which means I missed some things along the way.

It isnt. not even close. This forum has the same amount misinformation as every other camera line specific forum on DPR. No more no less. Look at the D800 v D4 high ISO thread, it is an excellent example. People buy expensive cameras because they want to and they can afford, not because they know more.

That is also not true. Every other forum in DPR is just as bad, some are worse, M43 for example, ridden with zealous fanbois.

You should check out photo.net. people there are much more polite. Only downside is it is a lot less active than DPR.

DPR is the way it is because the way it is managed, whether by design or by accident. But for what its worth I think it is a good balance. I for one am not interested in a "mutual support group" where no one disagrees with anyone else. Truth will only emerge if there is enough voices, with more voice, you get noise. Sure, some people in DPR are unnecessarily hostile, but that is just like in real life, if we want a free and liberal society, we have to accept that that freedom will lead to some crimes and immoralities.
