I had not taken photos with my A57 camera for the last few weeks. I got the camera out yesterday to take practice shots with each of my individual lenses and found that my images were over exposed by 2.5 stops and the white balance appeared a little "blue" as well.

I called Sony and they told me to "Initialize" from the Menu setting.

Sure enough, it appears to have fixed the problem. Any idea what happened?

Wouldn't surprise me if it has a "limp-home" or minimal mode it defaults to, when voltage drops to a certain point.
Not to take pictures with, but still to be able to see the menu system ?
Once there, it probably wants a full reboot to step out of that mode.

was the camera left "ON" during that period ?

the battery was down to about 35%. I initialized it without charging, in fact when I was on the phone with the Sony folks.

I am charging the battery now.

Before anybody laughs hard, this can happen. But how it would effect the white balance, will maybe moving it around while on has hit the Fn button and by random you just hard set a white balance. A wrong one... Same with the over exposure.

Before any shoot, check your settings! And after any shoot, return the settings to your own personal normal.

I once shot outside images at ISO 1600 on my old A200... it was a sunny day. I had forgotten to set the settings back.

1. actually I did find the camera was left "on" for a while. But I had taken several photos thereafter with no problems.

2. I made sure the white balance was on auto just to confirm as I checked all the settings. The A57 is great about having the various options / settings available on screen with the Fn button in all the modes. That's one of things that drew me to the camera was the simplicity of operation. Usually I shoot A mode.

3. I am not sure what happened. I was curious if someone knew. I also wanted other photographers to know about the "initialize" option.
