The FZ50 presents certain ergonomic and performance features difficult to find together in any other camera. So the key features I like of the FZ50, that may be readily attributable to any other camera, are listed below for comparison and generating a golfing style handicap number. Every camera starts with a handicap of 7, striking 1 point for every feature met from those listed below. Cameras with the lowest handicap are nearest to a replacement for the FZ50.

1- One manual zoom lens covering at least 35mm to 420mm 35mm equiv. focal length.

2- An EVF/OVF.

3- A front wheel dedicated to instant EV compensation (preserving the right thumb to grip the camera).

4- A pronounced grip allowing the camera to hang from fingertips for long periods.

5- A dedicated hot shoe that is also compliant with standard photographic accessories.

6- A screen articulating at least to allow waist level perspective in composition.

7- A full grip pad/aid for the right thumb on the back of the camera that's devoid of controls.

Every time a camera is released, I will look to supply a handicap score in the comments beneath the release article or in a review of the camera/lens combination. This will be in the form "Rated FZ50 -7" followed by a link to this thread for explanation.

The FZ50: DSLR handling of a bright, non-extending Leica 35-420mm F2.8-3.7 lens. I live in hope that Mr Ichiro Kitao, Mr Michiharu Uematsu and Mr Yoshiyuki Inoue have triggered the update to the FZ50. Please update the FZ50. It is unique and users of it cannot update without compromise of one or more of its combination of features.
