Hi all,

My new D100 has tempted me away from many years as a Canonman, so I am still a bit of a newbie where Nikon kit is concerned, particulaly the various teleconverters available. I am looking for a 1.4x for my 80-200 f2.8 ED (the non AFS one) but am uncertain which one fits, if any. Also are there any non-Nikon choices (I have heard differing remarks about the Kenko). Can someone advise please?

Of course another option is the 300mm f4 - not sure if the funds will run to it but there is always eBay! Any advice here would be appreciated too.

Thanks in advance.

The Tamron SP Pro is quite good. It is completely compatible with the 80-200, including autofocus.

The one that says AF-S on the side. Best of the group and I've used all the third party converters. (Anyone need a spare converter?) It will even work with the AF-S lenses and the VR lens. Of course, if you were using AF-S lenses, I'll tell you to get the TC-14EII. But your not. Also, the 300mm F4.0 AFS is one fine lens.

The Sigma 1.4x Ex will work with the 80-200mm f2.8 in MF only on my S2 body...metering operates normal.

A bit early for me to rave about the lens - only taken a few pics with it and none of them in trying circumstances - but I don't have any complaints as yet. It is a lot bigger than I imagined, though not too heavy (compared to my 80-200!). Good finish, though not quite as nice as the Nikon 80-200. The Nikons, I think, do look and feel nicer. I had the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 for a couple of days until I sent it back and swopped it for the Nikon, and the same thing applied - you couldn't say the Sigma was badly finished, in fact it looked very pro-ish, but I was more impressed with the Nikon.

But we digress! I would be happy to post some pics from the 15-30, but I don't know how! Can someone educate me, please. I don't want to post a pic that is too big and takes ages to download. And how do I actually imbed the pics in a post?

I'm fairly new to Nikon also, but I can tell you my actual experience.

The Sigma APO 1.4x TC is manual focus only with Nikon AF lenses, despite its "AF" name - it doesn't have the Nikon AF drive pin, and will not AF with my 300/4 AF-S lens. It performs well optically with the 300/4 AF-S, but in manual focus.

The Nikon TC14E will autofocus with the 300/4 AF-S, but again does not have the Nikon AF drive pin for other Nikon AF lenses. It is a very good performer optically. When added to the 300/4 AF-S, the autofocus speed of the D100 becomes very slow, and often hunts, expecially in less contrasty conditions.

Right then...
I have done as you suggested.

http://www.pbase.com/phil_d/MyGallery is where you will find 3 pics that were all taken with the 15-30.

Be aware that all have been reduced in size greatly (I guess you must do this to keep the upload time sensible?) and the two tree pics are straight out of the camera.
Hope this is of use to you.

The Kenko autofocuses all my non-AFS telephoto lenses. (Nikon 80-400 VR, Nikon 180 F2.8, Nikon 135 F2.0) I haven't tried it but I bet it autofocuses my 300mm F4.0 AFS and 500mm F4.0 AFS. The VR is functional with this teleconverter also.

Thanks for all your input.

So are we saying that there is definitely no Nikon 1.4x that will work on the 80-200, and that we have to use other makes?
If not, which one will, and how does it compare optically with the alternatives.

Oh, the Nikon will work. It just won't auto focus. Great glass though. The best of the lot. If you want it to auto focus, then you need to get the Kenko.

Can someone clarify? With the D100 and all AF-S lenses, will the Nikon TC-14II and TC-20II be 100% compatible? Would these be the best choice for Nikon AF-S lenses?

Thanks.....JD

Hi Anthony:

I asked a similar question two days ago and received no response.

I also have the 80-200 non AFS. Do you have any experience with the Kenko Pro300 2X?

In terms of picture quality, how does it compare to the 1.4? Also, do you notice significant differences between the Nikons and the Kenko Pros?

I unfortunately have to ask these questions as the Kenko brand is not sold in my part of the World.

Btw, were any of your gallery pictures taken with the Kenko?

Cheers,
David

I've used the Kenko 2x with both the 70-300mm and 80-400mm VR. They work fine and autofocus as well. You'll need a lot of light though. There's a lot of glass to go through.

I took this picture last Sunday at Harper's Ferry on a bright day with a clear blue sky. The eagles were about 1000 feet. I took them with the 80-400 plus the 2x Kenko.

It's the one I don't have. I have a Sigma 2x and the Nikon TC-20EII. I probably won't be buying another 2x since I have the Nikon. The Sigma doesn't autofocus. The Nikon autofocuses AF-S lenses only.
In terms of picture quality, how does it compare to the 1.4? Also,

I really haven't played with it enough. I haven't even had time to run a brick wall test. I need to be desperate though to put the 1.4x on my VR and having a 560mm F8 lens to deal with.
I unfortunately have to ask these questions as the Kenko brand is

You should be able to pick it up through B&H if B&H ships to where you are.
Btw, were any of your gallery pictures taken with the Kenko?
No, it's too new. I haven't done enough work with it.
Cheers,
David

They aren't compatible with ALL the AF-S lenses. But they are compatible with all the one's you should be using them with. They aren't recommended on the 17-35, 28-70 and 24-85. Go figure.
