When I bought my v1, I planned to use the 10-100mm on it most of the time. When I needed something smaller,I planned to use the 10-30mm off my j1 even though it is bright red. I planned to sell the J1 body.

Problem, I decide to keep the J1 in the living room for family pics. It blows away any compact/smartphone, it has a built in flash that is good enough for "kid with ..." Pics.

Thus, I need a smaller lens for my V1 from time to time. For example, I was in NYC on Monday on business. Throwing the V1 in my briefcase would have been fun.

1) 10-30mm - it is small, light, cheap and has VR. For my uses (family, travel, street), t sees like good choice.

2) 10mm - more expensive, no VR, but I get a smaller, faster lens. Do I really need VR for a lens this size?

Any thoughts and ideas will be appreciated.

With a fast prime, VR isn't that important IMO, personally I wouldn't bother with both of these lenses. I'd go for the 18.5mm f1.8. unless you need a zoom, or wider angle, otherwise the 18.5mm really is the only thing you need.

For wide angle, the 10mm isn't exactly that wide either, the 6.7-13mm is a much better lens (so I've heard). I have the 10mm as well, but I rarely ever use it. Most of the time (that's 99%), I have the 18.5mm on my camera. That is truly a great lens, a must have, IMHO!

I've been contemplating 10 vs 18.5 as well lately to compliment my 10-30 kit zoom. Seems like the 18.5 is the must have lens in the system, I'm looking forward to picking one up.

The 10mm f2.8 is a nice lens, but perhaps you should consider the 11-27.5 as well, which is sharper than the 10mm or the 10-30mm lens. Personally I feel VR is over-rated as a must have feature in a mid-range zoom as it doesn't help with any subject that moves. I don't have VR on my D7000 midrange zoom and very rarely miss it.

As others have stated the 18.5 is a great lens. With that said, I have both the 18.5 and 10 and the 10 still has it's place. Although it is heavier than the 18.5 the 10 is a fair amount smaller. Also, the focal length is better for taking family or friend group shots at a restaurant. I've sometimes had the 18.5 only with me and when asking a waiter to take a picture of us they either back up too far (if possible) or cut half of us out. Also, the UWA is a great lens (my favorite that I own!) but for group shots, when compared to the 10, it is often too slow once you get close to a focal length that doesn't distort people too much. I say get whatever lens it is that fills your needs, otherwise you'll end up just buying something and you still won't be satisfied. If the portability of the 10mm is what you are after, buy it!

the 18.5! this is what a nikon 1 lens should be: small, light, inexpensive, and optically sound. not to mention arguably THE most versatile prime focal length.

I use the 10mm very small and light, try buying used on e-bay they are cheaper than the zooms.

I am pleased with the results I have achieved.

Allissa, this is cropped a lot to avoid foot in the mouth problems, ha ha.

Kind of depends on what focal length you need. I have both the 10mm and the 18.5. If I head out with just the V1 and no bag I will most likely take the 10 for its compact size.
