SPP conversion error, damaged file system

In my recent holiday my DP2 automatically switched off right after taking a picture due to low power. Obviously the file system of the SD was damaged during this process and isn't readable anymore. I managed to recover the X3F files but can't open them. Neither with SPP ("conversion error") nor with Silkypix. Did anyone experienced something similar and knows a solution. I really appreciate your help.

Usually if power is interrupted mid-write, at most an image is corrupted. Usually not the whole file system. But SD cards are flaky so anything is possible.

How did you recover the X3F files?

If you have a Mac, I have a program you can run to try and recover the files from an SD card image.

Other people may have different recovery suggestions you could try also.

Just do not format that card, or write to it in any way! And once a card has done that to you I would never use it in a camera again.

Dear Kendall, thanks for your reply.

I found a program for Windows who was able to recover the files to my harddisk. The filenames are not the original ones but the file size seems to be correct.

However it's not possible to open those files. Neither with SPP nor with Silkypix Pro.

I am no expert in file recovery from flash cards.

But, what you say sounds strange.

How can several images be broken, and why are the files you find broken? Strange.

You might try to download my X3F tools and run x3f_io_test on the extracted files and see what you get.

BTW - if the images are important you might be able to rescue at least the JPEG images from the files. My x3f_extract can do that if the file is not too damaged.

There are several programs that can extract embedded JPEG from any file. Here is one, its commercial. http://echoone.com/filejuicer/ It also claims to be able to recover JPEG data from deleted flash cards.

I once had a similar issue with my DP1. The reason was that there was one corrupted file on the card. This file crashed all applications including MS Explorer and Fastpictureviewer. At the end I managed to delete this file and all the rest was OK. The best way to find the corrupted file is to put one file after another into a separate folder and try to open it with SPP. If it crashes you know that the last file was corrupted.

Send two consecutive numbered damaged X3F files to me (e-mail address should be visible in my profile). If I am able to recover these, then we can recover most of other images also.

Hi Arvo, thanks for the offer. Unfortunately I can't find your email address. Just sent you a PM.
