S30: Dead, stuck, whatever pixels.

Hi all,

So, I bought an S30 last week and almost immediately noticed some hot pixels in the LCD display. Also, I also had a couple of pretty noticable stuck pixels that showed up in my pics when I downloaded them to the computer, so I guess there were pixel issues in the CCD as well. Now, these stuck pixels could even be seen easily on my computer with the pic at only 35%.

Anyway, I returned the camera today for another S30 (I love the feel and features of the camera---and overall, the pics look great). The problem is, I downloaded some pics with a dark background and there were two, fairly noticable stuck pixels there already!

That's twice. Is this normal? Should I return this one, too? Is this a problem with the S30?

Any info would be appreciated.

If they took the first one back then they'll probably take the second one back as well. Otherwise call Canon support. I just ordered one for my brother and I'm trying it out before I give him a tutorial tomorrow. I hope we don't have any problems. Sorry about your bad luck. After reading your post I'm going to run some tests and check it out carefully.

Hi Brett,

I've had my S30 for 10 months now. I've taken over 5,000 pictures with it. Have taken it to altitude, taken it to hot, dry climates, taken it to cold ones, and humid ones. I have a few 'hot' pixels that show up on 200 ISO with 10-second exposures taken with the lens covered up. I may be one of the lucky ones. If you do a search on this forum you'll find lots of discussion about this, so you are definitely not alone. It would seem to me to be unusually unlucky to get two bad cameras in a row, so I would consider taking the second one back if I were you. It would seem that the problem gets worse over time in any digicam, so you're starting off at a disadvantage. A good site on this is:

http://webpages.charter.net/bbiggers/DCExperiments/html/hot_pixels.html

I would be interested in seeing a poll on this site from owners of S30 cameras. Do you, or do you not, have hot pixels, and are they noticeable with a pic at 35%, as with Brett's camera?

RETURN IT!
yes! do that!

my 330 developed dead pixels after 3 months and Canon repaired it for me.. u definitely won't want a camera which gives u horrible looking spots all over your pictures! especially if its new!

only complain about my 330 is that the words are peeling off.. instead of IXUS its now XUS... and instead of DIGITAL its D GITAL...
stoopid canon didn't want to change my casing...

Well, I probably will return it. It's kind of disappointing, though. I'm somewhat afraid of getting another one, but there really isn't another camera out there that has what I'm looking for.

Oh, and I should add that these pixels show up even using Auto mode. So, they're there at shutter speeds of 1/60 while shooting an indoor shot---not just at slower shutter speeds. Ugh.

Thanks for the replies.

I have a 6.5 month old S30. Been used for 7000 pics. No bad pixels. When I first got the camera, I exchanged it after 3 days because it had 5 bad pixels. The replacement has had no problems to date.

eventhough this issue is real, this is an excellent cam and i would suggest getting a cheap 5yr warranty and replacing the ccd as needed...

i had a very clean ccd @iso50 at first, since apirl this year, now one shows at about 1/15 to 1 sec if i let the cam heat up. this issue will probably get solved by pushing nr down to 1/60, or mayby some other ai method. it's unusual for you to see any hot pixels past 1.3sec nr kickin...whatsup with that?
