Hi, I have been experimenting in photoshop again LOL. I used this image to create a painted effect. Create a duplicate layer. On the new layer, name it dissolve. On the dissolve layer, to to filter blur smart blur edge only and normal. I set the settings to 15% and 50% of the two things that are in smart blur. Cant remember what they are called off hand as I am doing this from work LOL.

The image with now be black with white lines. Press Ctrl & I together. This should inverse it and have white with black lines. Create a third layer by making a duplicate of disolve. Call this third layer soft and switch it off by clicking on the eye.

Now with the disolve layer add a layer mask and using a large soft edge brush, changing the effect from normal to disolve, start erasing the photo, as much as you want. As little or as much. Once this is complete, turn back on your soft layer. Now finally blend the third layer with soft light and it gives a wonderful painted effect. To create the border, make sure you have black as your background. Increase the canvas size to desired effect. This should give you a black border. Using the colour picking tool I chose two colours from the image. Use the magic wand to highlight the black canvas and with the gradiaent tool set to fore to background, draw a diagonal line from left to right. This should then fill in the black canvas with the colours you have chosen. You can also add some gausian Blur and noise if you wish to.. Hope this all makes sense :)

Howie:

This is very cool. Had never considered using a brush set to dissolve mode to paint a layer mask. Simply brilliant. I have no one to blame but you and me for all the fun I've been having the past hour or so. :=) Thanks for sharing your steps.

So, is this how the Layers stack up when finished (excluding the frame)?

1. (Top) Smart Blur (15,50), edges only, inverted (blend=SOFT LIGHT, opacity=100%)

2. (Middle) Smart Blur (15,50), edges only, inverted (blend=NORMAL, opacity=100%). The layer mask is painted with "black" using a large, soft brush, brush blend mode = Dissolve, enabling the underlying layer to show through
3. (Bottom) Background (Opacity=100%)

When you paint on the layer mask, what opacity and flow are you using for your brush (ballpark it if not sure).

Could you post the original image. I feel like I'm in the neighborhood, but don't feel I'm getting nearly the painterly-look you got, which is very good.

Do you recall the resolution and dimensions of the image. I'm wondering if 72ppi is too "loose" or is 300 ppi "too tight."

Curious minds want to know!

Thanks in advance...

Hi Danny and sorry this is so late in replying :) Basically I set the brush to 100% opacity and on layer two where disolve is used, it basically leaves a certain amount of the smart blur on the photo. All the blends were 100% too. I have a link to the original but I have cloned out the peice of grass on it.

Here it is

I think this type effect works best on darker and gloomier images.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you very much for the ideas. Here's my first rendition (with a couple of changes to the technique). With a little more effort it looks like it will produce excellent results. I appreciate the effort you put into this and your willingness to share.

Wow that looks excellent susan. I really am impressed with the work you have done. Like you say, my guidelines give the general idea to the photo but it does not mean it has to be followed rigidlu and this is a prime example :)

Well done

Hi Lynda,

Well done on your first effort of this style effect. It looks pretty good and captures the effect quite well. I think for a landscape without water on a gloomy day the effect works best. I have used this effect on some photos and it does not work well. Well done and thanks for sharing :)

Howie
Howie,

Here is my try, but it is not as smooth as yours. View the
original size and you will see what I mean.
http://www.pbase.com/image/6928440/large This size doesn't look
bad. I would love to have your opinion.

I'm in PS 7 now and you said this..

"On the dissolve layer, to to filter
blur smart blur edge only and normal. I set the settings to 15% and
50% of the two things that are in smart blur."
On the New Layer I can do a Smart Blur.. It says something about not having something Slected.. Maybe I'm doing something wrong here?

Howie, as I understand it, you set Smart Blur as follows:
radius: 15
threshold: 50
mode: edge only
What setting do you use for Quality?

Thanks,

Ron

Hi Paul:

Nice results on your interpretation...

How to distribute your action:
  • Create a new action set
  • ALT+Drag your action into it (this will make a "copy" of the action)
  • Action palette menu: Save Actions... (Desktop is convenient)
  • Attach .atn to e-mail and send away
Put me on the distribution if you would. :=) [email protected]
