Hi I need some help in choosing my first SLR.I am confused between Canon 700d and Nikon D5200.I have read a lot online about both but still not clear.

After looking at all this information on the reviews and suggestions, I am even thinking of Canon 60D, and some prefer to go for Canon 650d instead of 700D and Nikon D7100 instead of D5200.

Photoghraphy has just been a hobby to me but I want to gain more knowledge about it.Can you please help me out as to which one is the better choice?

You say it has just been a hobby. How long has it been a hobby and what kind of camera(s) have you been using? What did you like, and dislike, about those cameras?

How do you plan on using it? How often, and under what circumstances?

How much do you plan/expect to spend on lenses? Which ones were you thinking of getting?

Do much you expect to shoot video? What kinds?

How long do you expect to keep this camera?

Do you see yourself upgrading to full frame at some point?

What is your budget for body and lens(es)? Is it flexible?

Do you expect to continue buying lenses and accessories? Or is this it?

You may not be able to answer all these questions, but the more info you can give, the better the advice will be. Someone with serious ambitions and a large budget would get different advice from a student who just likes taking vacation pictures and wants to take better ones. Good luck finding the perfect camera.

First things first, do you have a budget? And what are you planning to be shooting mostly?

Secondly, the two cameras are really similar. Although I feel the d5200 has the slight edge. The 700d is really similar to the 650d. Only difference I know are the 360 rotating dial and a few more creative filters added into the camera. This is nothing much though. I think what you will be choosing here is not so much about which camera you are getting but more about which system you are investing in. Photography can be an expensive hobby so be sure you are really interested before buying a DSLR. :-) The full potential of the DSLR will only be achieved with the right technique.

Do you have any friends who utilise either system? If so, you might consider getting the same system as them. This way you can share lenses and maybe accessories.

I have used Sony A230 for a few months.

I like a good zoom, better picture in low light or dark, good white balance.

I won't mind spending couple of hundres bucks extra for better deal but won't go too far.

I will be shooting videos a little, but still will prefer good quality.

This camera will be stay with me for atleast couple of years, after that it depends how serious I get about photography.

I probably won't be upgrading to full frame atleast in near future ( say next 3 to 4 years).

I am thinking of 18-135mm lense for Canon 700D, about others I don't have much information yet.

Hope this helps...

Thanks

I think the best option for you right now would be the Canon 650D. You might get it at a reduced price now.

But still, try out both the cameras in hand, play around with the menu etc & pick the one you like.

Everything little makes little to no difference.

Sid

Hi

I am pretty flexible with the budget, as whatever I buy will be with me for at least couple of years. I want to get the best out of these.

But, I am confused with some saying that the quality of Canon is better than Nikon!!

Is it true? Just because I have never used Nikon, I have used Canon powershot few years back which was very good.

And which one would be better option to from

Canon 650D, Canon 60D, Nikon D5200 and Nikon D7100

I have got more confused after reading more reviews!!! whicjh is a bit annoying :(

Thanks

Well, sometimes nikon is better sometimes canon. They are competitors. It is true IMO that in the past few years, canon poweshots were better than nikon coolpixes. However, the recent Nikon coolpixes seems to have improved alot whereas the canon hardly seems to change much.

The canon 700d uses similar or I would say same sensor as seen from cameras 3-4 years back. The sensor now has better video focusing but in terms of image quality and performance, its the same. If you do a research, you will find the sensor is the same in the 550d. At that point of time when the sensor first came out, it was considered good and I would say Canon was better than Nikon. However, technology has moved on and it seems the Nikons are better now. Their sensors seem to edge Canon's in low light. They have less noise and can focus better in dim conditions.

If you want to take the plunge now, I would say go for the d5200. If you are very sure you are willing to invest lots of time into photography, then get the d7100. If you can wait, there are rumours next week Canon is releasing their 70d, with a new long awaited sensor. Their first upgrade in apsc sensor since 2009. I don't know yet how it will do but no harm waiting.

Thanks it really helps:)

I have been thinking of Nikon but just because I have used Canon in the past and some of the reviews were making me confused. But you made a very good point about the sensor.I have read about how the new models after 550D have some new features added but the sensor is same.

I can wait another couple of weeks or so till the canon 70D is released.I am in no rush for buying it.

Thanks now its more clear for me to decide.

Really appreciate:)

give it a go !

For the thread I want to clarify the statement about the sensor: it’s true starting with the 7d/60d/t2i the Rebel line has not seen an increase in megapixels of 18. However the capabilities of t4i/t5i over the predecessors are far different.

- 9 pt autofocus with high precision center point (this is far and away the biggest improvement)

- DIGIC 5 vs DIGIC 4; which results in better jpg quality, better raw quality and better noise control at higher ISOs than its predecessors; see my gallery for sample shots supporting this claim)

- 5 fps burst over 3.7 fps burst

- Faster focusing in live view for video

- In camera chromatic aberration correction

- Touch screen

- Stereo mikes for video recording

- In camera photo albums for video

- Creative filters such as in camera HDR

All in all I would lean toward the Canon as I think they are better for beginners; whether you get the T4i or T5i is a matter of do you want the new STM lenses or not. Each manufacturer has their advantages and disadvantages.

It’s like buying a car, there are always trade-offs to be made. You make the purchase with the most advantages to you and the least disadvantages. With any system you can’t go wrong. Go to an electronics, big box store, camera store to handle the cameras before purchase.

Thanks for the helpful information :)

So you reckon that image quality on Canon is little better than Nikon?
