I bought this camera second hand with only 3700 exposures!!! even though it's 'only' 5 megapixels, it does a great job. I have made prints up to 11X14 with no image quality problems... It is a bit hefty as the body is made of metal, but that just adds the the durability of the body! its weather resistant and has seals everywhere!!!! So a little rain will not hurt the camera. I pair this with my 50mm macro lens and its a very happy partnership!!!! I would recomend this camera to anyone who can get one!!!

fully agree!

you have to work around the limitations, but that can be fun if you don´t have to make money with your work...still my most used camera, though i own a e510, g3, epm1...with battery grip its is a weapon of self defense

I have three 5 MP cameras. E-1, Leica Digilux 2 and an Oly Camedia 5060. From all of them I am always amazed at the quality of the respective output. The E-1 paired with my ZD lenses does a very nice job. I like the ergonomics of the camera, and the balance even with heavier lenses. My E-3 is not as well balanced as it is the E-1 when I attach a 7-14 or a 50-200.

Quite neutral from the WB point of view and good metering, it allows for very relaxed shooting. Pitty is the low light performance and the limitations it brings, but one has to realise this is a 10 yr old camera. Mine is but still in great shape!

Cheers Fernando

I find that there are no real limitations, however because of the limited resolution, I have only printed to sizes of 11X14... Have not tried anything bigger! The LCD screen is also a bit small for a camera of this stature!!! but other than that, I find it more useful than my E-500, or E-420 which is 10 Megapixels. the color you get from the camera can not be matched and the dynamic range is so great!!!!

I bought mine for very little money and I also wonder why people sell it, without having used it properly. It's a 'granny', but as most grannies they have a lot of life experience, are gentle and don't see so good in low light, are willing to see only the good things and take life as it comes! And that's exactly what my feelings are about my Granny-1. It's a wonderful piece of work and every time I pick it up it gives me a good feeling and a joy to use. It's images are of a very special class and has some warmth and adventure in them.

But....I am in the position to buy an E-3 as well and I am still thinking if I will do so. The reason is that pictures in low light (at 800 iso) are (too)noisy and that might not be the case with the E-3, or even less!

Does any of you have any experience with that issue and does the E-3 bring better low light pics?

The E-1 is good up to ISO 400 in my experience. The E-3 is much better than the E-1 at ISO 800, but its sensor is not the Kodak sensor. So, while you might get better performance from the E-3 at ISO 800, it won't be the same picture quality. Not that it's bad. No, it's not bad at all. In fact, it's great. It's just not the same as the E-1. The E-1 provides a level of IQ that's unique among digital SLRs ... up to ISO 400 anyway.

Holy wow, so amazed with the clarity of second pic

Sure E-1 is a great camera and its my all time favourite camera since 2005. I own E510/E-30/E-330 but E-1 is always my favorite and its the first camera I grab for any kind of shooting.

Here are a few from my collection. Taken with E-1 + ZD 14-54mm + ZD 50-200mm mk1 combo.

ISO-400 taken hand hold with 14-54mm Mk1 lens.

ISO - 800 (Noise was cleaned in Neat Image) with ZD 50-200 mm Mk1

ISO - 800 (Noise was cleaned in Neat Image) with ZD 14-54mm Mk1

ISO-800 (Shot in raw and converted to Jpeg in Picasa as there was a bug in Picasa so it shows ISO 240) with ZD 50-200 mm Mk1

ISO-3200 (I push the limits on E-1 ;)... Noise was cleaned in Neat Image) with ZD 14-54mm Mk1

Thanks....it was just a matter of seconds. Grabbing my E-1 with the 50-200 and click!

Wonderful pics and you use the same combo as I do. But I wonder why you use the E-1 more often then for example the E-30 that is claimed in reviews to be a very good camera. Is it the colouring and shutter of the E-1 or something else? I also own the E-510 but compared to the E-1 that's a toy and a bit too plastic imho!

If I might answer:

The E-30 is a good camera. But it has a totally different sensor design. The E-1 features a brilliantly conceived Kodak sensor while Olympus E-cameras that came after the E-500 use a Panasonic CMOS-type sensor. I've worked with the E-30 as well as the E-3, E-5, E-510 and E-420. As good as these cameras are ... and they are very good indeed ... the E-1's Kodak sensor has them all beat. Of course, this all comes at a price. The E-1 is "one of the noisiest cameras ever made," as one reviewer put it, and is a 5MP camera, which limits cropping room and to a certain extent print size.

Sorry was stuck with some office work and couldn't respond to this thread. First of all Thanks for the comments. The reason I use E-1 a lot is due to the colors it produce which is hard to beat specially family portraits you will get a unique film like look.

E-30 is an excellent camera a bit noiser too ;). I own E-30 since 2009 and still use it for some macro stuff with wireless flashes etc.,

Holy spirit, I had both zd 14-54 mk2 & zd 50200 mk1 with e3 the color character was totally different with this magnificent Kodak sensor... Legend sensor

don't be afraid to get it wet either with sealed lenses either... it's a great camera... You can even stabilize it by grabbing the panny 4/3rds lenses but lose the sealing.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of you out there that think you own a super-low shutter count E-1, really don't. The E-1 is an exceptionally easy camera to accidentally/sometimes intentionally, have it's shutter count reset to "0000". I've come across more people that "claim" to have a low mileage E-1 based on the shutter count, than the people that truly do have an honest low shutter count. So, how does one know for sure? There really is no full-proof way of telling. However, there are MANY aesthetic clues that can either refute or corroborate the shutter count. The trouble is, most people haven't been able to scrutinize enough samples to know what to look for. Unless you've owned your E-1 since new, just be aware the shutter count has a very good possibility of being wrong if is shows below 5K. Just my opinion, but I do have thirty-one E-1 bodies.
