70-300 IS makes a lot of noise, is that normal?

Hi All,

I recently bought a refurbished EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (non L version), the first copy I got was really load when the IS was on. I sent it back and got a second copy which is much better, but still loader then any of my other lenses. Is this normal for this lens, or for that matter, any lens?

The lens finds focus quickly enough, but then for a second or two after there's a whirling noise followed by a slight "thunk". It only seems to happen when IS is on.

Thanks in advance for your insight.

I have a 70-200f/4 & the IS makes a bit of a whirring noise. It doesn't seem to affect the system, & I have read a recent thread that says it is "normal". The lens & IS still performs superbly. I have no experience of the 70-300 though.
I bought one also not long ago, i'm also a Pentax shooter and was surprised by the sound of the IS on that lens ! The SR or IBIS in my Pentax cameras is not that loud.

But it looks like it's normal for that lens.

yeah this is pretty normal i believe.

i've got the 70-200 f4L IS USM and it's pretty whirly loud on that lens too..but again it's a known characteristic. The 24-105L has a similar sounding IS too i found when trying one out.
apparently the IS is much quieter on the 70-200 f2.8L II though.

I have this lens, sounds typical. It is noisier than my other IS lenses.

Thanks everybody; you've set my mind at ease. The noise level is definitely acceptable, I just wanted make sure that I wasn't getting a lemon.
