I was wondering how I can take good photos with my new Canon EOS 1100d, I've been outside trying to take photos of the stars and star trails, and also the moon but the moon photos turn out too bright, and when the moon is gone i try to take star photos and you can hardly see them..

My Specs Are:

Canon EOS 1100d

18-55 NON IS lens

30 second exposure

RAW format

Manual Mode

F 3 6 (the highest my lens can go)

Can someone please help a new photographer that is eager to take star and astro photos :D

Thanks,

Google "How to photograph the moon", "How to photograph star trails"

The 18-55 will work fine for star trails and the milky way so long as you have a good tripod and remote shutter release + intervalometer.

In order to photograph the moon including shadows and defined craters you will need a good quality lens with at least 300mm focal length, the more the better, and learn how to post process.

To learn more about photography I would suggest reading at least the first, better all four, books by Scott Kelby:

for night star trails, moon shots, tips and techniques, etc. check out the astro-photography section

Put the camera on a tripod, turn off autofocus, set lens to 3.6 or however large your aperature can go, set ISO to 100, set lens to infinity, set exposure for 30 seconds, push button and wait. That should get you started. Good luck. Play with settings and experiment or Google night photos and read what others do.
