hi there. just just bought a k-30 kit with 18-55 wr. I never had a dslr before (was using gxr A12) and have some questions

I have heard that Pentax lens has a different characteristic - more tend to Europe lens than Nikon/Canon ones. is that true?

which lens would you suggest, zoom / prime ones? I like landscape but also occasionally some portraits (that's why I had both gxr 28/50 mms)

the 18-55 wr performance was okay but I find my A12 28/50 mm produce better images. of course I can't expect much from kit-lenses.

Also I didn't know k50 is on the way but anyhow the k30 was a good deal at a reduced price.

Hi Allen, it looks like the K50 is mostly (entirely?!) a cosmetic update so your current lack of ignorance shouldn't spoil your bliss at the new purchase!

With regards to lens choice, there is a thread on this very same topic posted recently, so you might like to check it out: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/51601303

From what you've said so far you seem to have similar photographic interests to me. The lens I'd most like to get hold of right now is the Pentax 18-135 WR. Very versatile and a decent step up from the kit lens, although I have to say the 18-55 is not too bad at all. If you're not averse to manual focus you might want to pick up a nifty fast fifty, say a Pentax A 50mm f1.7 for example.

I also love the Pentax A 28mm f2.8 for landscapes I find it sharper than the kit and to produce colours that are lovely and saturated straight out of camera. If you have more cash to splash I'm sure you will get many recommendations to try the Pentaxt Limited series of primes.

The WR 18-55mm kit lens is OK (I took a friends wedding present with it for a 24" x 16" canvas), maybe when you get to know how to really use the K-30 you will appreciate how good it is.

Have a look at my Samyang 14mm photographs.

Other great lens are the manual focus Pentax's 28mm f2.8, 50mm 'A' and 'M' versions

I have others: Carl Zeiss, Helios, Vivitar Close Focus to name a few. I don't use or like Autofocus as I like the complete control of manual focus.

You can buy really good legacy lenses for little money and the image quality is fantastic!
