A couple of amazing things happened this week. My wife gave me the OK to order my new camera and blurted out something about a new lens too for taking pictures of our dogs. While still in shock, I stumbled down to my computer and began gazing at the glowing monitor of images from B&H with glazed eyes. I will go with the k5 IIs as I never shoot in jpeg mode. I've decided on the Sigma f2.8 17-50mm EX lens for taking pictures of dogs and other critters. It is a reasonably sharp lens and will fit in well with my other lenses.

The other item is that she wants my old k10d for dog pictures and she'll have fun with the Tamron 70-300mm, a lens which now rarely gets used. When I first met her, she was not a dog person, nor was she into photography. Now she trains dogs and wants my k10d. Might be a good year for Pentax :-) ........................................................Jim

Great decision - one you won't regret!

Congratulations Jim. That should be fun.

I have a K-5 II coming today or tomorrow.

Cheers.

Ron

It will be an excellent camera body for the things that I photograph....................Jim

Thank you Ron. 7 frames per second and very good image quality at high ISO's will help out with bird photography. I picked up some Moire with my k10d last week and resolving the issue in Lightroom was not a big deal. ..........................JIm

You're a lucky man to have such a wife. I'm sure you'll enjoy your upgrade. And of course we expect to see lots of photos posted here. And maybe include your wife and dogs?

Ask her if she wants your car. I'm thinkin' a little red Corvette might be in your future!

Hi,

As soon as it comes in I'll test it out and let you know what I think of this combo.................Jim

I think she saw me struggling with the slow auto focus and realized that the k10d works for some things, but not fast moving warblers. I'll have the traditional shot of a cat and some dogs in action to see how fast is the k5IIs and wow I'll be able to run some nice prints off of ISO 800 exposures...............................................Jim

Oh, that would not work--she really hates my Prius :-) ................................Jim

The K5 IIs has lived up to its expectations. A fantastic camera. I am returning the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 due to the fact that it will not focus. Tried it on the new and old cameras with the same result. Focused manually, the images were tack sharp...................Jim

The lens has a defect in the autofocus--it back focuses and front focuses in unpredictable fashion so AF microadjustment will not work for this case. I was only able to get a focus lock once. There are reports of bad copies floating around and this one will have to go back to Sigma. I bought it used and its practically new--previous owner probably dumped it after the warranty ran out. ..........................Jim
