my 280sx is having real issues. Yes i have the faulty battery warning issue. Now i also have an issue that if i turn the camera off while the lens is at at full zoom, when i turn the camera back on it will startup and return the lens to full zoom again. At this point nothing works, i cant get into menu and i cant use the camera to focus or take the picture. I have zoom partly back out again, focus on anything, then zoom full again. This gets it back working. I then have to remember not to turn the camera off without retracting the zoom or i have to go through the whole process again.

This may be a new FW bug because I often do that with the 260 and it always starts at wide angle next time. It will be interesting to see some other 280 owners response.

A long time ago we used to have to reset electronic devices by removing any batteries and letting them sit for hours to drain the CMOS memory, which may not apply to this camera. If you can find a reset switch somewhere, or go to the menu and use the reset option there, that might help.

The sx280 I had did not do this, as I many times was fully zoomed and then turned off cam, it started up at 25mm.

I did have the video battery indication issue though!

yes it didnt do this from day one, only now after 3 weeks. Just started doing it now. I wonder what makes it store the lens position in memory. Even taking out the battery did not resolve this.

I don't own a SX280 but my Panasonic ZS19 has a "zoom resume" feature that can be turned on/off in the settings. If activated, the camera returns to the zoom level it was at when the camera was last turned off.

Hopefully the f/w upgrade to fix the video battery indicator issue will fix your issue, as this is extremely bad.

Did you try the menu 'reset' (multiple times to make sure! - :) ), and start again with your custom settings? may help?

Can you return for replacement?

Really surprised sx280 is so buggy, sx260 was not, I liked the sx280 but returned it due to battery issue, heard a couple of horror stories for sx230!

Just curious, my SX260 is made in Japan, where is the 280s made?

yes i have tried the menu reset but did not help. I dont want to return it because the company i bought it from only replace, and then only after confirming the fault and it could be weeks. Id rather keep hold of the camera and remember not to turn off when in full zoom. If i dont turn off in full zoom the problem hardly occurs.

oh oh...trouble with the little Canon 280 ? Don't use full zoom. It's weak at the long end anyway. Limit it's use to 3/4 of the zoom...better IQ...such as it is.
