Just a few thoughts on my new camera..... I recently bought the Fuji x10 from Currys - ex-display for £269. I was looking for a small compact to carry about with me when I go walking/sailing etc. I also have a Nikon D7000 which due to its size and weight is used far less frequently than it should (when you take account of the investment it represented!).

The X10 is a fantastic little camera - all the more so at the price it's available for now.

I really like B&W photos, and love the way it captures tone and gradation in a way that is ever so subtly smoother than my Nikon. It has just about everything a camera enthusiast needs and I love the option to shoot 6MP EXR which I think works superbly.

I also love the (DSLR rivalling) dynamic range you can get with ISO400/DR400 - outstanding for a small compact or indeed many other larger sensored models. Noise control is fantastic with an EXR mode that really gives great results at over ISO1600. The lens is super sharp corner to corner and colour rendition is very good. I find myself spending more time composing pictures with the X10, particularly as I can't crop as much as i used to with the Nikon - this has made the experience a little more enjoyable to be honest. I also like the fact that you don't attract as much attention with the smaller compact and I have taken some more 'candid' or natural shots of people than would have been possible with the Nikon.

I updated the firmware to the latest version 2 and like the new control panel that comes up via the now inaccurately labelled 'raw' button. I know some people have commented that the camera is almost too complex, particularly with the EXR modes - I personally like the variety and options and find it far more engaging to have to think about what I'm doing or what options to use for a particular shot.

Faults are (and I'm being picky): AF not good for fast moving subjects, battery life is poor (but plenty of cheap 3rd party ones available), auto WB can get confused sometimes so revert to one of the settings, viewfinder not brilliant but at least it's got one (and I do use it frequently), artificial horizon seems overly sensitive and refresh rate is slow - but it does work!

I bought the excellent Ef-20 flashgun second hand from Ebay + lens filter adapter + hood and a couple of spare battery's and the whole 'kit' fits into my rucksack outer pocket and I can hardly feel the weight. I can start enjoying taking photo's again and stop worrying about weight and security of carrying over a £1000 worth of DSLR kit.

So the Nikon's being sold and I'll get the x100 as well which I'll use for specific assignments.

Welcome to the Fuji forum as an X10 user and sailor. I (and I expect others) look forward to seeing some shots from you, as well as your thoughts on how to get the best from this great little camera. Let me know if you find a good waterproofing solution for on the water shots.

cheers

What makes you think battery life is poor, its good for two to three hundred shots on one charge.

This is about average for a camera of this Size.

Couldn't agree with you more. I used to take my Nikon D3100 to birthday parties, etc. and now the X10 to accomplish the same or better (because people are more relaxed). I even bought a second X10 in case my first one fries. I'm shooting in 6Mpix mode with 400% DR and sometimes I'll increase contrast in PS later.

Yes, it's amazing how waving a big DSLR around makes people act less naturally... its a lot easier to compose a picture discreetly with the X10 and the low light performance and f2 lens are a real boon!
